CONDITION & ADDITIONAL INFO —Mies van der Rohe’s approach to design was famously reductive: eliminate everything unnecessary until what remains is so refined that it becomes inevitable. The BRNO is a perfect example. The chair’s distinctive flat-bar cantilever frame eliminates the need for conventional front legs, allowing the structure to curve gracefully beneath the seat. The result is a chair that appears almost to float. But the apparent simplicity is deceptive. Every proportion, every curve and every junction has been carefully considered. The structure isn’t hidden beneath decoration; the structure is the decoration. That is quintessential Mies. —Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1930, the BRNO is one of the great icons of twentieth-century modernist furniture. But its New York story is particularly fabulous.
