Mid-Century Mexican Modernist Footed Copper Tray by Los Castillos, c.1960’s Condition: Original Vintage Condition Price $350 Dimensions: 5H x 13.50W x 7.50D This striking mid-century modern copper tray by Los Castillos, Mexico, showcases the workshop’s mastery of sculptural metalwork through its fluid crescent form and hand-shaped construction. Crafted in the 1960s, the piece reflects the artistic philosophy of Los Castillos—where traditional Mexican silversmithing techniques were reinterpreted into bold, modernist expressions rooted in form and function. The gently curved body, accented by spherical brass feet and rolled ends, demonstrates the careful balance between organic movement and structural stability, achieved through skilled hammering and shaping of solid copper. Each element speaks to a hands-on process, where artisans manipulated raw material into a functional object that also reads as a piece of decorative art. Retaining its original vintage condition with a naturally developed patina, this tray embodies both the craftsmanship and evolving character that define authentic mid-century Mexican design. Fun Historical Fact Los Castillos was founded in Taxco, Mexico—an area internationally celebrated for its silver and metalwork—by Antonio Castillo, one of the pioneering figures in Mexican modernist design. After working with William Spratling, often called the father of Mexican silver, Castillo branched out to establish his own workshop, where he expanded beyond silver into mixed metals like copper and brass. During the mid-20th century, Los Castillos became known for blending pre-Columbian influences with modernist design principles, creating pieces that felt both ancient and forward-thinking. Their work gained international recognition, helping position Mexican metalwork as a major contributor to the global mid-century design movement. The squat rack and bench sold. You get: Weights: 2× 45lbs 2× 35lbs 2× 25lbs 4× 10lbs 2× 5lbs 2× 2½lbs A seven-foot, 45lb bar A pad for the bar (good for squats) 2 blue bar ends/collars It is RUSTY from being near saltwater, it happens, but its perfectly usable and would be good for a home/garage gym, you could put it outside yourself and not worry too much about it. I oiled them periodically, but nothing beats sea spray in the end. I repeat: the weights and the bar are RUSTY. Please do not be surprised by this fact. Thats why its so cheap. Its great as a beater set you can leave outside, as I did. Pickup in Ormond Beach on A1A, near the Publix. Will consider a trade for a good keyboard/electric piano. Make me an offer.
