This specific pair represents a rare intersection of mid-century design history: manufactured in Italy by master metal and leather artisans, and imported and sold exclusively through the premier American luxury design house, W. & J. Sloane. HISTORY & PROVENENCE: The design trajectory of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s iconic 1929 Barcelona Chair includes a fascinating structural evolution. When the chair debuted at the Barcelona International Exposition, the frame was originally engineered as a bolted-together construction. As the design transitioned into mid-century mass manufacturing, major producers—including Knoll—moved away from this original blueprint in the 1950s, re-engineering the frame to utilize seamless welding. While this shift created a sleek, solid-profile alternative, it drifted away from the mechanical architecture Mies van der Rohe originally intended. Preceding and concurrent with the Mid-Century Modern era, elite Italian workshops chose a different path, remaining faithful to the original 1929 design by preserving the authentic bolted-frame layout. Because the historic American design house W. & J. Sloane curated modern furniture for an affluent clientele who valued traditional craftsmanship, they imported these purist, Italian-crafted editions. Each chair proudly bears the stamped Made in Italy mark alongside its original W. & J. Sloane retail tag, capturing a rare moment in design history when Italian makers preserved the original integrity of a modernist masterpiece. CONDITION: The chairs are in great vintage condition. Both chrome-plated steel frames are structurally sound and aligned squarely. One wooden wedge shows a small slight split on one corner (see last picture). In keeping with the original 1929 engineering, the frames are lightweight. The chrome shows age-appropriate wear in the form of slight surface tarnishing that will easily clean up with a light, proper buffing. The cushions are in great shape. The high-grade leather is intact on all four cushions, showing beautiful, authentic character wear and no stains. All buttons are present and secure on all sides of all four cushions. The load-bearing leather support straps on the frames are firm, fully intact, and color-matched to the cushions. The small leather cushion-security straps are intact, with slight fraying on the stitching.
