Vintage 70s 80s Curly Flame Maple Spindle Captains Chairs Pair (No Table) 2-Set Country Cottage Farmhouse Boho Classic Side Accent Chairs Rain was lashing against the leaded glass windows of an old Hudson Valley estate when we first saw them. Tucked in the corner of a quiet library lined with leather-bound volumes and smelling of cedar and pipe tobacco. Captain’s chairs. Low-slung. Unshakeable. Built during an era when furniture makers still treated woodcraft as an art form rather than a speed run. Those seats, the estate curator remarked, tapping the warm timber, have held scholars, strategists, and late-night readers for decades. The grain almost moves under the lamp light. He was understating it. The centerpiece of these chairs is the extraordinary lumber: each thick, contoured saddle seat is carved from solid curly tiger maple. When light strikes the surface, the horizontal, flame-like grain creates a shimmering 3D depth—a natural optical phenomenon known as chatoyancy—that ripples across the wood. To balance these dramatic seats, the swept crest rails, turned spindles, and splayed legs are turned from dense, smooth-grained American hardwoods. Finished in a rich, warm nutmeg-amber hue, the construction offers incredible structural integrity alongside unmistakable vintage character. We acquired the pair before the auction gavel even fell. Whether surrounding a compact breakfast bistro table, grounding an eclectic reading nook, or serving as handsome accent chairs in an entryway or study, they strike that ideal balance between heirloom warmth and modern studio living. Up for sale is a pair (2) of vintage 70s/80s spindle-back captains chairs. (No table!) Condition: Very good vintage condition. Sturdy, solid construction with clean surfaces and a beautiful luster. A few light scuffs from normal age and use, but overall quite well preserved. They have been conditioned with a light, tinted wood oil to nourish the grain and bring out their rich natural glow. The Chairs: Vintage 70s / 80s done in a classic Colonial / Windsor barrel-back captains style with warm nutmeg wood tones, contoured saddle seats, and detailed spindle turnings. Wood & Craftsmanship: Solid curly / tiger maple seats featuring dramatic horizontal flame figures, paired with solid American hardwood spindles, legs, and stretchers. Maple has been a cornerstone of classic American furniture making for centuries—prized for its dense structural integrity, striking decorative figures, and ability to take warm, amber-toned finishes beautifully. Style & Versatility: The captain’s chair evolved from traditional Windsor chairmaking, adapted with a lower profile, an integrated barrel-shaped backrest, a thick contoured seat, and wide-splayed legs for stability. They were designed for stability on ships with their low sling profile and splayed legs. They were very popular and spread to libraries and universities, thus known historically as scholar or library chairs. They transition effortlessly into Cottagecore, warm country, modern farmhouse, or eclectic interiors. Pair them with a bistro table, a small drop-leaf kitchen table, or let them shine individually as desk and accent seating. Measurements: 29 Total Height 17 Seat Width 17 Seat Height (Seat height is about a half inch lower than standard dining chairs, fitting the low-slung, comfortable style of the captains design). Staged images created with AI for design inspiration. Please see actual photos for true appearance and condition. Available for pickup in Northeast Seattle (Pinehurst neighborhood). Local delivery around the Seattle area may be possible for free or a reasonable charge. LHappy to assist with loading! Cash, Venmo, Zelle, PayPal, or Cash App accepted at pickup. Easy loading access.
