Often imitated, endlessly copied, but never ever duplicated, the all-cane Cesca arm chair by Knoll is one of those rare designs so influential that its DNA seems to be everywhere. But there is only one original—and this is it. Designed in 1928 by Marcel Breuer, the Cesca (originally known as the B32) was radically different from anything that had come before it. Its revolutionary combination of tubular steel, bentwood and cane turned it into an international sensation, and nearly a century later, its iconic silhouette remains effortlessly contemporary. Breuer later renamed the chair “Cesca” after his daughter, Francesca. Which brings us to the matter at hand: this dark, handsome quartet of BRAND NEW Cesca full-cane armchairs in a super rare all-black frame: the body is made of hardwood beech stained in a matte ebony finish, the metal frame is made of tubular steel in a luxurious ultra-matte onyx finish (rather than the standard metallic chrome finish), and both the seat and back support are made of cane. That contrast is where the magic happens: the warm, natural texture of the cane cuts through all that black, creating a beautiful tension between light and dark, softness and structure, warmth and restraint. Call it film noir meets Bauhaus: elegant, impeccably dressed, and quietly commanding attention without ever asking for it. Manufactured by Knoll just over a year ago (June 2025) and still sealed in all original packaging and boxes. Each chair is stamped with a precision-engraved KnollStudio logo and Marcel Breuer’s facsimile signature on the leg frame, Knoll’s black “Made in Italy” label, and an additional unique Knoll serial code sticker for added verification. (A note on the Italian provenance is further below.) The retail price per chair is $1,404 plus shipping and tax (a total of $1,757 per chair) and there is a 2 month long wait time. Thank you for looking! RARE GIFT FROM ITALIA (NOT CHINA!) 🇮🇹 One detail worth knowing if you’re shopping for a Cesca: The fully caned version is still manufactured in Italy. Sadly, Knoll’s Cesca versions with partial or full fabric upholstery are now primarily manufactured in China and thus sell at a much lower price point, including both dining and counter/bar heights. So when shopping for a newer Cesca, pay attention to what’s underneath. Many of these are listed by other sellers on here with the small “Made in China” sticker removed. ALL BOXES AND PACKAGING INTACT Purely for photographing purposes, we momentarily removed the outer plastic sheeting covering each chair (and, just as briefly while acquiring the set, a couple of the covers off one chair to expose the gorgeous arms), but that’s literally as far as we’ve gone. We have not taken the liberty of detaching or discarding a single piece of foam, paper or protective wrapping from the rest of the seats or frames. These remain exactly as they arrived from Knoll, still dressed in their factory protection. After all, there’s something rather special about the first unveiling. We want you, and you alone, to enjoy the delicious pleasure of being the first one to see them in their full splendor. THE HOLY TRINITY OF KNOLL — PLUS A SMALL TEASE —There is a deeper reason the Cesca feels so important. Alongside Mies van der Rohe’s BRNO chair and Eero Saarinen’s Executive chair, the Cesca belongs to what we might call the Holy Trinity of early Knoll—three designs that helped establish the visual language, cultural stature and enduring legacy of the company. Breuer. Mies. Saarinen. Three titans of modernism. Three radically different approaches to the chair. The Cesca represents the experimental spirit of the Bauhaus; the BRNO, Mies’s relentless pursuit of structural elegance; and the Executive, Saarinen’s softer, more human approach to modernism. Together, they form something of a pantheon of Knoll design: the foundational pieces from which so much of what we now recognize as modernist furniture emerged. —At the risk of being called a tease: we will be sharing our sumptuous collections of the BRNO and Executive in the coming days.
