Traveling Man Treasures is selling this striking and alluring late 19th or early 20th century French Grand Tour cast bronze sculpture depicting the Ancient Roman Greek Venus (Greek Aphrodite). The original was discovered in 1820 on the island of Milos, hence the name Venus de Milo, and is now housed in the Louvre in Paris. This bronze is in good condition as shown, with a beautiful dark and thick patina. The Grand Tour Era (17th-19th centuries) was a time when the upper class traveled a specific European route to educate men and boys in classical art and architecture found throughout the European continent. Bronzes of this scale were created and purchased as souvenirs. This excellent vintage cast-brass sculpture is remarkable for its dynamic combination of the most sacred sound Aum in its written form and the most popular God of the Hindu pantheon. The piece is in excellent vintage condition with a beautiful multicolored patina. The Upanishads sing poems of the syllable that is artistically molded hereto seat within itself, Lord Ganesha, the creator and remover of all obstacles. Wearing an intricately jeweled crown and seated in the position of royal ease, Ganesha looks like a regal divinity. In accordance with iconographic requirements Ganesha is shown with only one complete tusk, the other - which was severed from his head, is held in his lower right hand. In the lower left hand he holds his favourite modakas. The other two hands hold his attributes, the elephant goad and the noose. A serpent is coiled around his protruding belly forming the udarband. Ganesha is suitably ornamented as he sits to rule the cosmos.The image rests upon a semi-circular pedestal upon which sits the mouse: Ganeshas vehicle. This original framed lithograph by Leslie Cope depicts a serene landscape featuring a riverboat named Lorena. It is signed by Leslie Cope and is from 1989. The print is of a black and white sketch. The picture area is 12 inches by 16 inches. The framed is 17.5 inches by 21.5 inches. Leslie Cope was a British-born American painter best known for capturing the rural landscapes of Ohio, New Mexico, and England. In a style somewhere between realism and Impressionism, Cope used watercolor and oil paint in producing his bucolic scenes of farmland and villagers. Born on August 10, 1913 in Stoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom, Cope and his family came on America in 1931 for his father to work as a ceramic designer in Ohio. He went on to work as a pottery designer, then as a camouflage artist during World War II. The artist died on April 11, 2002 in Roseville, OH. Today, Cope’s works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, among others. A loose in prime condition, signed and numbered (#225/600) print measuring 12 tall x 28.25 wide Image measures 8.5” tall x 24.75” wide “A number or years ago I spent several weeks in the picturesque fishing village of Pelican, sketching most everything in sight! Ive done a number of paintings from my sketches and most recently, Pelican Fuel Dock. People asked me, Why are all those oil drums lined up on the dock. I had no clue. I called several people from Pelican and finally got an answer from a long time friend. Waste fuel she said, from fishing boats and other vessel is stored in them and periodically hauled away... or not.” “Rie Muñoz (re moo nyos), a Dutch-American, was born and raised in California. Rie passed away in 2015. She lived in Alaska since 1951, when she traveled up the Inside Passage by steamship, fell in love with Juneau, and gave herself until the boat left the next day to find a job and a place to live. Since then Juneau had been home to Munoz.”

These fine pieces were hand done by 2 of the most famous of Nahua Indian artists. The mother and son team of Margarito Carillo and Reynaldo Guerrero. Reynaldo is 68 years old, I am not sure if Margarito is still alive. The hand work involved in this art is amazing, and of the finest quality. Many are sold, so please let me know if you want to see what I have left. the large pieces are ~20x28 (height/width depends on whether they are horizontal or vertical pieces) the small pieces are ~12x16 (height/width depends on whether they are horizontal or vertical pieces) Prices: Large (I also have one other large piece in blue) - $300 each Small ones - $150 each Plates - $150 each Call if you want to come by and see them Andy ABOUT NAHUA INDIAN LACQUER ART: The Nahua Indians of Mexico are direct descendants of the Aztecs. If you visit one of their remote villages in the Sierra Madre Mountains in the state of Guerrero you will hear the ancient language Nahuati, spoken instead of Spanish. The lacquer art for which the village artists of Olinala have received international acclaim dates back several centuries and was strongly influenced by Oriental art traded by the Spanish and Carried in Galleons to Acapulco. To begin the process the women of Olinala spend several days each year extracting a delicious oil by toasting Chia seeds, which are then ground down and squeezed through a linen cloth. A paste called Chamati is prepared by mixing Chia oil with two ground minerals: red lead oxide and carbonate of magnesium. Some artisans add whole garlic, which adds to the brilliance of the lacquer. The Chimati is then smeared with the finger onto a gourd or wood surface and later dusted with calcium carbonate powder using a deers tail brush. Immediately the piece is polished using a piece of smooth agate or small glass bottle. One polished a mixture is made of ground minerals and earth pigments and rubbed several times in order to form a consistent coating over the piece. The work is left to dry and then another color is built up and the piece is polished with a stiff cotton cloth to obtain brilliance. The surface is then carved with sharp cactus needles attached to feathers to reach the first color and then, with sticks of quills a painted pointillism effect may be created and the animals and plants may be outlined in fine cat hair brushes. Nahua Indian lacquer art is a fine example of the folk art that Nelson Rockefeller avidly collected in the 1940s and 1950s and is exhibited in folk art museums throughout the world. Traveling Man Treasures Curiosity Vault is selling this gorgeous 1940s porcelain Buddha/Budai statue from the Antique Republic Period, 1912-1949. One of the Seven Gods of Luck, this Hotei Buddha is shown sitting with his belly exposed and laughing with five children. This particular piece is larger than most, coming in at a stately 12 tall. Buddha is a popular subject in China and is often depicted in sculptures, smiling and with children. The children have older traditional haircuts and lovely clothing in colors of orange, yellow, white, pink, blue, green, purple and black. This fun and versatile piece is in excellent vintage condition with vivid polychrome enameled colors and no chips, cracks or repairs. Found these many years ago atop a pile of stuff outside an old hardware/general store in Vermont that had gone out of business. Saved for myself, couldnt resist but put very little use on them. NOTE: Im 61, slender, long arms/torso/legs. These hang nicely on me, good length in the leg and arms (a bit on the long side), but *huge* amount of extra space girth wise. So, good for a tall person, from thin to heavy set. All zippers functioning. A few paint/other stains. Frayed fabric, a hole, stitching on insulation worn in places.
