AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE IS AN ALL-ORIGINAL FRAMED, SIGNED, TITLED, AND NUMBERED VINTAGE MID 1960S MODERN MIDCENTURY POST-WAR SHOWA-ERA LARGE DOUBLE-OBAN JAPANESE COLOR WOODBLOCK ART PRINT CREATED BY SOSAKU-HANGA ARTIST KAORU KAWANO (1916-1965) CALLED “BUDDHA WITH FLOWER” THAT DISPLAYS THE ARTIST’S USE OF COLOR, SHAPE, AND WOOD-GRAIN PATTERNS TO CREATE A FLOATING BUDDHA HEAD WITH CLOSED EYES WEARING A FLOWER GARLAND WHILE SURROUNDED BY FLOWER PETALS! Please Note: This original Kaoru Kawano color woodblock art print still retains all of its original framing, including the matte board, the glass front, and the frame’s backside paper covering which has Kaoru Kawano’s original artist’s paper label! Dimensions: The woodblock print’s image size is approximately twenty two inches (22”) in height by fifteen inches (15”) in width. Because this Kawano color woodblock print still retains all of its original matting and framing, it cannot be easily accessed to obtain the dimensions for prints sheet/paper size. However, according to the website for the Japanese Art Open Database, the format for this particular color woodblock print is known as Double Oban and the sheet size measures approximately twenty three and one half inches (23 ½”) in height by eighteen inches (18”) in width. To this end, the dimensions of the woodblock print continue underneath the matte board. The overall dimensions of the original wooden frame are approximately twenty eight and one quarter inches (28 ¼”) in height by twenty and one quarter inches (20 ¼”) in width. Signature: This original woodblock art print is signed by the artist in pencil toward the bottom right corner “Kaoru Kawano” along with artist’s red seal mark. In addition, the bottom margin reads from left to right “63 / 300 BUDDHA WITH FLOWER KAORU KAWANO” along with several Japanese characters. And again, the frame’s backside paper covering has Kaoru Kawano’s original artist’s paper label that reads “SELF-CARVED SELF-PRINTED KAORU KAWANO” Lastly, there is a framer’s stamp on the frame’s backside paper that reads “Wilhelmy’s Picture Framing 17644 Chatsworth St Granada Hills” along with a phone number. Condition: This Kaoru Kawano color woodblock print looks to be in very good and clean condition with some age darkening around all four sides! The original matting is in excellent and clean condition. And the original wooden frame is in very good toward excellent and clean condition with a few small scuffs and markings. Lastly, the frame’s original paper backing is in very good and clean condition but does have a few small punctures. This Kaoru Kawano Double-Oban Japanese Color Woodblock Art Print is safely stored in a private home and is easily accessible. In 1934 he studied art at the Kawabata Art School and was accepted by the Japan Print Society. World War II interrupted his work, and he ended up as a prisoner in Serbia. He survived and continued his work as an artist after the war was over. In 1954 he was awarded the Koguga prize and his work began to be recognized around the world, including exhibits in New York, Chicago , Seattle and Yugoslavia. Using a mix of the old tradition of Japanese color woodblocks, as well as the Western approach, he creates a simplified, yet impressive, interpretation of his subjects. Kaoru Kawano mostly focused his art work on the subject of children and animals, although he has done some landscapes as well. In particular his work on denoting young girlhood gave him national recognition across Japan. One of the biggest differences that sets Kaoru Kawano apart from other woodblock artists in his generation is the use of the grain in the woodblocks to his advantage in each of the pieces of art that he creates. It creates a beautiful element of texture and layering to his prints. He has done both open and limited edition prints, while signing most of the work that was completed during his lifetime. The posthumous prints are noted by a PH with a circle around it usually on the verso of the print. Kaoru Kawano’s prints can be seen in numerous places including the archives of many art museums. Museums such as the Art Institute of Chicago, Harvard University Art Museum in Massachusetts and the Brauer Museum of Art at the Valparaiso University in Indiana all have Kawano prints in their collections.
