Robert White
1907 Calendar: Whittier’s “The Quiet Room” Complete w/ original box

The only reason this calendar survived like it did (basically new) is that it was kept in a box for 117 years box (box included) . It was probably meant as a gift, but it was never used. Against the backdrop of the calendar is a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier entitled “The Quiet Room,” a poem about the importance of peace and quiet in order to find God. The starburst design is really neat, with a gold sun sending out rays in all directions. The original red bow tops off the calendar. All 12 months and days are represented. The calendar measures 10 inches in diameter and is just like it was back in 1907.

saleRare 1920s Lithographed Putnam Dyes Advertising Fan: Jackson, MI
Kimberly Flores
Rare 1920s Lithographed Putnam Dyes Advertising Fan: Jackson, MI

In 1925, three businesses operated in a building on Francis St. One of those businesses was the Wesley G. Van Ness Pharmacy at. 138 Francis. The pharmacy stayed there until WW II. This particular fan was from the 1920’s, when Putnam Dyes used this artwork on advertising fans throughout the U.S. The lithographed front with General Putnam escaping from the British during the Revolutionary War is very colorful and has only a few, small discolored spots (barely noticeable). The bottom left has the company logo insert that was used in the early 1900s. Someone long ago repaired the handle with a thick gray string to keep the handle secure. They did a good job. On the back is the pharmacy’s name and address (no phone yet) with the motto: “Try the Drug Store First.” Since the pharmacy was located next to the Otsego Hotel, guests could make a quick trip for necessities. Also on the back are descriptions of three different Putnam products. The fan itself measures 8 3/8 x 6 3/8 inches while the original wood handle is approximately 5 3/4 inches. The fan is a great piece of Jackson, MI, business history and is in great shape for being a 100 years old.

Very Rare LION COFFEE “Instructions on Etiquette” Late 1800s

Lion Coffee began in 1864. In 1882, it became part of the Woolson Spice Co. of Toledo, Ohio. Alvin Woolson made Lion Coffee the second largest coffee producer in the world through great marketing. The company included trade and holiday cards with each purchase. This booklet measures 5 by 3 1/4 inches. It has 16 pages with 135 etiquette rules from the world of the late 1800s. Some of the “instructions” were a bit funny by today’s standards such as “Avoid slang phrases” and “Never address a person by name in a public place.” The front cover has a slight nick on the right border, but it has no effect on the great graphics. The back bottom border also has a nick, but does not affect any of the graphics either. I’ve seen plenty of trade cards and other Lion Coffee antique items over the years, but I’ve never seen anything like this. I doubt if a few—if any others—still exist. This promotional booklet is a great glimpse into society over 130 years ago. Because I live in Michigan, I will be happy to ship or we can meet at the Cabela’s exit off US 23..

Joseph Lopez
Two Early 1900s Holland (MI) Rusk advertising blotters

I purchased these from an estate in Holland, MI, years ago. The Holland Rusk Co. began in the late 1800s in Holland, MI. Rusk is a dry and crunchy round biscuit—basically twice-baked bread. It’s used in a lot of recipes and as a type of toast. In the Netherlands, rusk is used as a breakfast food, something like toast. It’s also used as a type of shortcake base. These two advertising blotters were put out as a promotional item for the company. They were obviously never used based on their condition. The blotters measure 8 1/4 x 3 3/4 inches and are made of a light cardboard. We could arrange shipping if preferable.

Kimberly Allen
Large Original J. P. Coats Litho Cardboard Poster:We Never Fade

In 1830, James and Peter Coats took over their father’s cotton mill in England. They developed a new way to make affordable thread, which had typically been made of silk, by taking very fine cotton strands and winding them tightly into thread. Business boomed around the world. In the mid-1800s, the U. S. Placed heavy tariffs on British imports, so the company established a shop in the U.S. J. P. Coats used brilliant marketing. The company made display cabinets from their empty wood spools in the factory, gave them out to general store merchants, but only if the owners ordered plenty of thread to fill the display cabinets. In the later 1800s, before J. P. Charts merged with Clark & Co., they hired artists to create trade cards. What makes this poster so rare is that it is the same image used on one of those trade cards, except in poster form. It measure 13 x 20 inches and is lithographed on light cardboard stock. As you can see from the photo of the back of the poster, this poster is an original. The artwork features a young African-American boy straddling a spool of J. P. Coats thread. A crow is on each side of the spool. In the upper right hand corner is artwork showing the sun looking sad. Below the sun is a fain picture of house, while a strand of trees is shown on the left border. The upper right corner has the phrase “We Never Fade.” Although there is some faint staining underneath the sun, it does not interfere with the major artwork, which ha retained its color over the years. I have seen quite a few small trade cards advertising J. P. Coats and quite a few spool cabinets, but I have never seen an original poster like this one. I’m guessing this poster was used as a general store display.
