Yosemite Valley, to me, is always a sunrise, a glitter of green and golden wonder in a vast edifice of stone and space, he once mused. I know of no sculpture, painting, or music that exceeds the compelling spiritual command of the soaring shape of granite cliff and dome, of patina of light on rock and forest, and of the thunder of the falling, flowing waters. Born on February 20, 1902 in San Francisco, CA, the artist trained as a concert pianist before turning to photography in 1930. Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM II lens. Mechanically solid, has performed flawlessly for a dozen years. Cosmetic signs of use consistent with a workhorse lens of this age. Clean glass, no haze or fungus, some typical internal dust which has no effect on image quality. There is a small nick in the front rim which is also strictly cosmetic and does not affect the filter threads accepting filters normally. Zoom and focus rings turn smoothly and all switches operate normally. Lens mounts and unmounts normally and all contacts communicate normally with the camera. Auto focus and image stabilization operate normally. Includes everything shown in the photos - original hood, tripod collar and lens cap, and a generic rear cap. $1075 Cash and local pickup only. ABOUT THIS WORK The original painting is housed in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Robert Delaunay painted the Eiffel Tower over 30 times between 1909 and his death, transforming it into a definitive symbol of the machine age, dynamism, and modernity. His approach shifted from fracturing the tower using Cubist techniques to exploding it with vibrant geometric colors via Orphism, an art movement he co-founded. This tall, narrow work presents the Eiffel Tower rising above historical sites and monuments of Paris, and crowned by vortices of red, yellow, blue, and green. Robert Delaunay derived the attenuated nude figure on the left from a postcard showing an ancient fresco of the Three Graces in a Naples museum. The figure stands for classical beauty in juxtaposition with the modern tower. Through repeated renderings, the Eiffel Tower became not only a personal emblem for the artist but also the incarnation of the ethos he called Simultanism, which affirmed a fusion of the creative mind with the experience of modern life, rooted in industrial architecture, mass communication, and the metropolis. Delaunay infused those modern subjects with the dynamism of bold color contrasts. This picture was a study for a panel that adorned an architectural project at the 1925 Paris International Exposition, which popularized the modern design style of Art Deco. ABOUT ROBERT DELAUNAY (1885-1941) Robert Delaunay was a French painter, born in Paris. Apprenticed for two years to a theatrical designer, then began to paint. Influenced by Neo-Impressionism 1906-7, afterwards by Cézanne; a friend of Metzinger and the Douanier Rousseau. Series of pictures of Saint-Séverin, The Eiffel Tower and The City. Married the painter Sonia Terk in 1910. Exhibited in the Cubist room at the Salon des Indépendants in 1911 with Metzinger, Gleizes, Léger and Le Fauconnier. Started to use pure colors again early in 1912 and at the end of the same year painted his first Disc and Circular Forms, his first abstract pictures. First one-man exhibition at the Galeries Barbazanges, Paris, 1912. His work was much admired in Paris by Apollinaire, who gave it the name Orphism, and in Germany by Klee, Macke and Marc. Lived in Spain and Portugal during the First World War; returned to Paris in 1920. After painting various figurative themes such as nude women reading, runners and portraits, he returned in 1930 to complete abstraction and made numerous compositions with circular discs and color rhythms, sometimes in low relief. Executed with assistants huge panels and coloured reliefs for the Aeronautics pavilion at the 1937 Paris International Exhibition.
