BABY KRISHNA STEALING BUTTER (GHEE) Thanjavur (Tanjore), Tamil Nadu, South India early 19th century Opaque pigments, gold leaf and sukka (limestone paste) on coarse cotton canvas laid on wood the vertical-format composition depicting the beloved scene of Lord Krishna as a child stealing ghee (clarified butter) from his foster mother Yashoda the child portrayed with a faint and contented smile on his face, holding the large butter jar under his arm and next to his hip, wearing an ornate and heavily encrusted headdress with the typical peacocks feather at the top, his accessories indicative of his importance and divine nature, including several thick gold necklaces encrusted with untested rubies, and green and red glass beads; a golden waistband; thick bejewelled armbands; wristbands; anklets; and a ceremonial garland of fresh pink flowers resting on his shoulders and extending until the right foot Baby Krishna flanked by his mother by birth, Devaki, to the right and his foster mother Yashoda to the left both mothers heavily bejewelled and making offerings to the child Yashoda a piece of butter and a green parakeet, and Devaki a lotus flower the scene set underneath a lobed golden arch with green curtains at the bottom a frieze with two devotees prepping ghee balls prasadas behind them a white cow and a shrine mounted, glazed and framed Approx: 18 x 15 inch including the frame. The image of Lord Krishna as the young thief of ghee is perhaps one of the dearest and most popular subjects in Tanjores painting. Usually commissioned by members of the South Indian aristocracy, the devotional scope of these paintings is still served to this day. abcdxyz

A mid-century teak dining room table with two leaves and four teak dining chairs. This is a beautifully done teak veneer dining room table with two removable leaves and four solid teak chairs. There are two side chairs and two captain chairs with arms. This set is unmarked, which is a shame. It is a gorgeous set. To the eye, as well as after extensive research, I am almost certain it is made by Klein dienst, sometimes written as “Kleindienst”. They were a very small scale, high quality, family run factory in Oldenberg, Germany. They operated from the 1950s into the 1970s. The design of the table legs being 2 ¼“ x 2 ½“, as well as the way they are integrated into the surface of the table, all point to a Klein dienst piece. The two captain’s and two side chairs have the same arts and crafts/Danish style with their 2 ¼“ x 1 ½“ solid teak pieces. The cushions and upholstery of the chairs curve around the edge of the chair in front and back. The chairs are also cushioned and upholstered in back for comfort.. The table measures 43 inches square by 28 ½” high. Each leaf adds 16 inches in length, allowing the table to sit at 43”, 59” or 75” in length. The seat height of a chair is 19 inches, with a back height of 28 ¾ . The table is in excellent vintage condition with a beautiful teak veneer. It has been oiled lightly to relieve it from the Colorado dryness. It has gorgeous grain and great color. There is a dark streak in one of the leaves. I am not 100% certain if it is some type of darker wear mark or a natural grain. It can be seen in image 10, and with the leaf inserted in image 4. The chairs are also in excellent vintage condition with excellent grain and a light oiling. They have new high density foam for maximum comfort and they have been professionally and expertly re-covered in a mid-century inspired Knoll/DIVA/Evergreen fabric. They have also been covered underneath for a clean and finished look. See image 9 This is a beautiful mid-century suite that would feel right at home in a mid-century space or an arts and crafts setting. It can be seen and purchased at the address in the listing. With the monsoon the colors of the shringara shift to brighter hues of deep red and contrasting saffron. Dressed in a loose red garment (pichhora) with bold border and motifs and a turban, decorated with a jeweled turban ornament, Shrinathji is garlanded with enameled lotus buds flowers mala and light pearl strands. In the crook of his right arm is his signature flute. - The Shringara in this painting is for Ashvina Navaratri, Shukla 8th - the Mukut or headdress is described as ‘Pagh with Khump Morpinchh jod’ - the ear ornament is mayurakruti kundal - Dress: Kaachhani - Vanmala (garland) of lotuses around the stele - Pichhwai: Silver. Light malmal with woven flower buds (any day in Chaitra-Vaishakha) The ornamentation for this occasion is kept to a minimum probably because of the warm weather. This is an identical composition among the Shrinathji temple Pichhwai holdings done by Ghasiram. Typically this pichhavai is hung on Ashadh Krishna 1, right on the cusp of the monsoon season. The grey background and oval opening depicts the cave opening on Mount Govardhan. This is a larger Pichhwai , hand painted on natural undyed cotton fabric, backed by a fabric dipped in madder aVegetable pigments. Approximate size: 60 x 35 inch. Includes 2 inch border all around Although overtly religious, it does not simply express a set of religious ideas or values and is much more than a merely visual art to be looked at and appreciated.
