John Bradley Hudson, Jr. (1832 - 1903). Watercolor on paper, 9.5 x 14 inches, sight. Signed and dated 1892 . Known for his marine landscapes, painter John Bradley Hudson studied under Charles Octavius Cole around 1850. Like many 19th-century artists, he was an ornamental painter who decorated signs, coaches, fire buckets, and fireplace boards. Hudson was one of the many artists who painted in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the late 1800s, and he wrote Journey to the White Mountains in 1859, a diary which he illustrated profusely. His work was exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum in 1868. Hudson resided and worked in Portland, Maine, from the late 1850s until the 1890s before moving to Massachusetts.
