Please Note: This color etching looks to be mounted in its original matting and oak wood frame, and the oak wood frame still has its original sheet of glass on the front as well as the backside paper backing. Signed in pencil along the color etching’s bottom margin from left to right: “29/150 The Crested Trumpeter of Assam Sergio Gonzalez-Tornero 1970” Measurements: The sheet-size of the color etching that can be viewed within the frame’s matting measures approximately twenty one inches (21”) in height by eighteen inches (18”) in width. But according to the website for the Yale University Art Gallery, which owns another version of this color etching, the actual sheet size of this color etching is twenty four and one eighth inches (24 1/8”) in height by twenty and one eight inches (20 1/8”) in width. The overall dimensions of the oak wood frame are approximately twenty eight and one half inches (28 1/2”) in height by twenty five inches (25”) in width. Condition: The color etching itself looks to be in excellent and clean condition – absolutely beautiful! The oak wood frame is also in excellent and clean condition with a few small unobtrusive markings. The frame’s original backside paper backing does have some tearing along the top and sides. SERGIO GONZALEZ-TORNERO (1927-2020) BIO (the following is a complete reprinting of the artist’s obituary courtesy the website for Cargain Funeral Homes of Mahopac, New York) It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Sergio Carlos Higinio Gonzalez Tornero, age 92, of Mahopac, NY, who died on May 3, 2020. Sergio was born on May 22, 1927 in Santiago, Chile to Higinio Gonzalez Nolle and Rebecca Gonzalez Tornero. He lived in Chile, Brazil, England, and France and attended the Slade School of Fine Art. He moved to Paris to study printmaking at the renowned Atelier 17, where he met and fell in love with his future wife, artist, Adrienne Cullom. The two moved to New York City and worked together at Bob Blackburn’s Printmaking Workshop. After marrying, they had three daughters and settled in Mahopac, New York. Sergio was an accomplished and prolific printmaker and painter. He was a contemporary artist and a master of intaglio and viscosity printing whose work was driven by a compulsion toward modernist form. After visiting Haida Gwaii, Canada he became fascinated with Haida art in which he saw a deeply spiritual and gloriously formalist view of life. This became and remained a powerful influence in his work. He was awarded a grant from the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation and received numerous awards in his lifetime including the UNESCO Prize at the International Biennial of Prints in Cracow, Poland, first prize at the XII Biennale of Latin American Prints from Latin America and The Caribbean in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Trustees Prize for Painting at the Art of the Northeast Exhibit at the Silvermine Guild in New Canaan, CT. His paintings and prints have been exhibited around the world and are included in numerous private and permanent collections, notably the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, the Bronx and Brooklyn Museum, the New York Public Library, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Sergio was much loved by many and he will be greatly missed by everyone fortunate to have known him. Sergio is survived by his wife Adrienne, his children, Katya Gonzalez (James Caufield) of Las Cruces, NM, Alicia Gonzalez (Noe Perez) of Mahopac, NY and Savina Gonzalez (John Gaudette) of Reno, NV and his granddaughter, Isabel Perez. Sergio is predeceased by his three siblings, Carlos Gonzalez, Higinio Gonzalez and Maria Teresa Gonzalez. A Private Interment will take place, Friday, May 8, 2020, with the immediate family only, at the Rose Hills Memorial Park, Putnam Valley, NY. The son of diplomats, he studied in Chile, Brazil, and the United States. In 1958 he studied at the Slade School in London before moving to Paris, where he worked at Stanley William Hayters Atelier 17 and met his wife, fellow printmaker Adrienne Cullom. They settled permanently in New York in 1962, where Sergio and Adrienne worked together at Bob Blackburns Printmaking Workshop. After visiting the Canadian archipelago of Haida Gwaii, Sergio became fascinated with the work of the indigenous Haida peoples, finding it to be deeply spiritual: this became and remained a powerful influence in his work. Principally a printmaker, Gonzalez-Tornero had more than forty solo exhibitions in Chile, Canada, Europe, and the United States. He discussed his printmaking techniques in an essay on page 325 of Fritz Eichenberg’s The Art of the Print. Gonzalez-Tornero was awarded a fellowship by the New York State Foundation for the Arts in 1987 and a grant from the Adolph and Ester Gottlieb Foundation in 1990. He was a member of and exhibited with the Society of American Graphic Artists, the Boston Printmakers, and the Philadelphia Print Club. His work garnered numerous prestigious awards including the UNESCO Prize at the International Biennial of Prints in Cracow, Poland; first prize at the XII Biennale of Latin American Prints from Latin America and The Caribbean in San Juan, Puerto Rico; and the Trustees Prize for Painting at the Art of the Northeast Exhibit at the Silvermine Guild in New Canaan, Connecticut. Sergio Gonzalez-Tornero died in Mahopac, New York on May 3, 2020. Throughout his long and successful career, he has explored a wide vary of subjects, from vibrant, solitary images of wild animals to complex meditations on psychological and spiritual dimensions of human life, from nearly pure abstraction that calls to mind elemental forces of nature to the history of art. In describing his printmaking methods, Gonzalez-Tornero has said, “The plate is a kind of bas-relief, with various modulated levels. The idea comes first; then follows a simple line drawing which is developed into a precise design, done directly on the plate with a felt pen. With asphaltum varnish used as a stop-out, the basic design is given a succession of deep etchings, alternating with much scraping, polishing, aquatinting, drilling, battering, sawing and cross-scraping. As long as there is metal, there is hope…Proceeding in this way, or in other ways that may occur to me, I pull trial proofs until I find the best possible manner of printing the plate—or if I find it unprintable, I may throw it away. At this point I enjoy the excitement of having ‘discovered’ the print. Then the printing of an edition becomes a question of time and hard labor, since I print all editions myself.” After studies at the Slade School of Art in London and Atelier 17, Stanley William Hayter’s well-known printmaking studio in Paris, Gonzalez-Tornero moved to New York City and later settled in Mahopac, New York.
