An original Michigan Chair Co. carved oak or mahogany Northwind arm chair is a highly collectible American antique produced in Grand Rapids, Michigan, typically dating from the late 1890s to the early 1900s. These chairs are famous for their deeply carved North Wind (or Green Man) face motif on the crest rail or center splat, which folklore dictates was meant to blow away evil spirits. Boreas was the Greek God of the cold north wind. I have seen only one chair identical to mine, which sold for an undisclosed amount at auction. My chair has a patina not unlike antique Chinese furniture and lacquerware.
