This Kashan Rug was hand knotted in Pakistan of 100% natural wool on a cotton foundation. This rug has knots per square inch in excess of 300+. It has full wool piles and is in like new condition. Beautiful colors with highest quality. No holes, plush and soft with a gorgeous design. This rug was acquired from a Metro Washington DC estate. Cleaned and ready to be enjoyed. The common design of a Kashan centers around a medallion, curved linear motifs like palmettos, leaves and arabesques designs encompass it throughout its surface area. From the medallion, the work across the rugs body is densely designed, giving it a thorough amount of character and originality that sets it apart from other Persian rug styles. Many Persian Kashan rugs follow a medallion-and-corner pattern, sometimes referred to as the book-cover or Koran design. The design, which arose during the 15th and 16th centuries, takes its inspiration from the beautifully tooled leather covers that were used to bind the Koran. The covers themselves were based on the intricate patterns found in the dome of mosques. The traditional colors used in Iranian Kashans are rich reds, blues, ivory, yellow, burnt orange and sometimes green. This classic design, like all hand knotted rugs, comes in a variety of qualities. These carpets have a 100 percent wool pile on a cotton base. The pile is clipped relatively short to allow the clarity of the design to come through. These rugs are typically dense and heavy.

Antique Persian Hamadan Mehraban runner was hand knotted in Iran of 100% natural wool. This rug is 90+ years old, has medium wool piles and is in excellent condition for its age. Beautiful colors with excellent quality. No repairs, very soft and showing some signs of abrash (uneven fading) due to the use of antiquated vegetable dyes. There are several animals woven into this rug. This rug was acquired from an established rug merchant. Clean and ready to be enjoyed. Mehraban rugs originate from the district of Mehraban located in the north-western region of Iran, between the cities of Hamadan and Sarouk. The weaving style and designs of these hand knotted Persian rugs are influenced by both – their neighboring cities as well as their own traditional techniques passed down from their ancestors. The finished rugs are sturdy and hard wearing. Through the years, weavers have always used superior quality wool that is sheared from their own sheep. The dyes are obtained from various animal and plant parts found in their surrounding environment. Mehraban weavers favor the single-wefted weave that is typically used by Hamadan weavers but their style leans towards the American Sarouk with its floral sprays. Although Mehraban rugs incorporate styles adopted from other regions, the weavers still practice basic techniques that have been passed down through the generations. This has resulted in an interesting mix of old and new in the finished rugs. Mehraban rug weavers use a combination of wool and cotton in their creations. Silk is very rarely used and synthetic materials are never used in making these rugs. Even the dyes used to color the wool are extracted from a variety of materials found in the surrounding areas. Dyes are most commonly extracted from the stems, leaves, roots, flowers, and fruit of various indigenous plants, dead insect shells, and locally found minerals. Mehraban rugs typically have a wool pile constructed on a cotton foundation. The pile is of medium height. The cotton foundation gives the finished rug superior strength and durability while the good-quality wool gives the rug a soft, lush feel. Mehraban rugs are known to last well for over hundreds of years. The toughness of the rugs make them a great choice for use in high traffic areas and in homes with pets.
