These fine pieces were hand done by 2 of the most famous of Nahua Indian artists. The mother and son team of Margarito Carillo and Reynaldo Guerrero. Reynaldo is 68 years old, I am not sure if Margarito is still alive. The hand work involved in this art is amazing, and of the finest quality. Many are sold, so please let me know if you want to see what I have left. the large pieces are ~20x28 (height/width depends on whether they are horizontal or vertical pieces) the small pieces are ~12x16 (height/width depends on whether they are horizontal or vertical pieces) Prices: Large (I also have one other large piece in blue) - $300 each Small ones - $150 each Plates - $150 each Call if you want to come by and see them Andy ABOUT NAHUA INDIAN LACQUER ART: The Nahua Indians of Mexico are direct descendants of the Aztecs. If you visit one of their remote villages in the Sierra Madre Mountains in the state of Guerrero you will hear the ancient language Nahuati, spoken instead of Spanish. The lacquer art for which the village artists of Olinala have received international acclaim dates back several centuries and was strongly influenced by Oriental art traded by the Spanish and Carried in Galleons to Acapulco. To begin the process the women of Olinala spend several days each year extracting a delicious oil by toasting Chia seeds, which are then ground down and squeezed through a linen cloth. A paste called Chamati is prepared by mixing Chia oil with two ground minerals: red lead oxide and carbonate of magnesium. Some artisans add whole garlic, which adds to the brilliance of the lacquer. The Chimati is then smeared with the finger onto a gourd or wood surface and later dusted with calcium carbonate powder using a deers tail brush. Immediately the piece is polished using a piece of smooth agate or small glass bottle. One polished a mixture is made of ground minerals and earth pigments and rubbed several times in order to form a consistent coating over the piece. The work is left to dry and then another color is built up and the piece is polished with a stiff cotton cloth to obtain brilliance. The surface is then carved with sharp cactus needles attached to feathers to reach the first color and then, with sticks of quills a painted pointillism effect may be created and the animals and plants may be outlined in fine cat hair brushes. Nahua Indian lacquer art is a fine example of the folk art that Nelson Rockefeller avidly collected in the 1940s and 1950s and is exhibited in folk art museums throughout the world. For a fun and interesting arts and crafts project you first trim a photo to size (and we do sell scissors that would work well for this separately) and then paste it in. Makes a great refrigerator magnet for those that like to keep magnets on their refrigerator and since the magnet on the back is decent size (an inch across, and it’s round) it makes it harder for it to fall off the refrigerator if the door was not so gently closed and it will be shipped in accordance to the USPS rules regarding the shipping of magnets. The text on the front reads: “Add your favorite Photo. Just trim to size & paste in. Magnet holds notes, recipes, phone messages, etc.” and on the back most of that is repeated and then it also says: “Magnet should be kept out of reach of children under 5 years of age.” and says the company that made it (which was Acme International, and they make neat stuff) and the year it was made (which was 2007, so you can’t find these in stores anymore). We only have a limited number of them available and can’t get more so get them while you can. You can pick from the regular size (like picture 1 and we have 8 of this type in stock) or the extra-wide size (like picture 2 and we have 9 in stock of this type in stock). Please let us know what type or types you want by either leaving a note to seller when you pay or messaging us around the time that you pay or we will have to pick. You can call, text, or email me anytime 24/7 (I always set my cell phone to silent when sleeping or busy). I don’t have a car so you will have to come to me to pick items up, but don’t worry my apartment complex is easy to find and to make it more convenient and safer for you and to reduce respiratory virus risks you can just park outside near the front of the apartment complex and wait in-or-near your car and I will bring out your item(s) to you. If you are taking public transportation my apartment complex is right by where the 77 and 73 bus lines intersect at the intersection of Halsey St and 122nd Ave (so either works great to get here) and is walking distance from some other bus lines and walking distance from the E 122nd Ave MAX station (which the 73 bus line also goes to) and when you get here you can just wait by the mailboxes at the front of my apartment complex and I will bring out your item(s) to you.
