Additionally, the Electricians are responsible for conducting underground service alerts that identify all City owned electrical lines in the public right of way. The Electrician’s duties include but are not limited to, performing complex, journey level electrical work to maintain, install or repair City electrical systems; performing preventative maintenance on street lighting systems, motors, and equipment to ensure their safe operation; inspecting newly installed electrical equipment and lighting to ensure safe operation and code compliance; repairing worn or defecting electrical components or parts including, pumps, controllers, fixtures and equipment; and performing digging, trenching, and occasional concrete removal and finishing and installing electrical conduit and conductors. THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL: Have completed a commercial apprenticeship program Possess the ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively on a crew Demonstrate a prideful work ethic Be safety oriented and adhere to all safety regulations, standards, and codes Have an organized, detail-oriented, analytical propensity Be experienced performing work at heights and in emergency/ hazardous situations Have experience working with, and around, high voltages *Additionally, possession of an IMSA certification in traffic signal maintenance is highly desirable Within one (1) year of employment the incumbent must possess and maintain an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I certification in traffic signal maintenance. Examples of Duties and Responsibilities Essential Duties: The following duties are considered essential for this job classification: Perform journey level electrical work as required to maintain, install, or repair all City electrical systems; perform skilled electrical installation, maintenance, and repair work involving municipal facilities, buildings, and street lighting systems; perform preventive maintenance on street lighting, electrical systems, motors, and equipment, which includes the safe operation of an aerial bucket truck and large construction equipment; inspect newly installed electrical equipment and lighting to ensure safe operation as well as code compliance; maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and associated costs; repair or replace defective or worn electrical parts, components, and controlling software in electrical systems and devices, electrical motors, generators, pumps, controllers, heating and air conditioners, lighting systems, and other fixtures and equipment; and perform associated work including digging, trenching, occasional concrete finishing and removal, and lifting electrical equipment, conduit, and pipe. Additional Duties: In addition to the duties listed in the Essential Duties section, each employee in this classification may perform the following duties. Any single position may not be assigned all duties listed below, nor do the examples cover all duties which may be assigned. Troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment to determine the nature of the problem; repair small and large electrical appliances; repair electronic components of electrical equipment as required for continued operation; make emergency electrical repairs to traffic signals, street lighting, generators, parking garages and pumps, as required; mark out underground electrical facilities as required for construction projects and perform related duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Knowledge of: Methods, materials, tools, equipment, and procedures used in the installation, maintenance, repair, replacement, and alteration of electrical equipment; components and parts used in modern electrical wiring systems such as pumps, motors, controls, and lighting; basic principles and components found in electronic control and microprocessing devices; occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in electrical work. In addition, a basic understanding of overhead line construction, Public Utilities Commission (PUC) Order #95, National Electric Code and Federal and State Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards is required. Ability to: Work independently and make sound decisions regarding work methods and tools; read, interpret, apply, and enforce applicable codes and standards as related to electrical installation; apply State, Federal, and local safety regulations and codes to municipal electrical work; work safely both independently and as a crew member on high voltages up to 600 volts A.C.; work safely near energized PG&E primary and secondary lines with voltages up to 4160 A.C.; provide technical assistance and work direction to other staff members; understand and interpret written and oral instructions; comprehend and make inferences from written material; read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and work orders; prepare and maintain records, reports, and work estimates; and perform work at heights and in emergency and hazardous situations. Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience - Sufficient experience as a journey level electrician in a municipal, commercial or industrial environment to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above; Education - Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. License/Certificate: In order to drive, individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely and must possess, or have the ability to obtain prior to the completion of the probationary period, and thereafter maintain throughout employment in this classification, a valid California Class A commercial motor vehicle operators license and a current medical examiners certificate. Must possess and maintain, within one (1) year of employment, an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I certification in traffic signal maintenance. Possession of, or ability to obtain, IMSA Level II certification in traffic signal maintenance is highly desirable. A current State of California Electrical Journeyman Certificate / License is highly desirable.
