Each has a built-in fan under the burners that draws smoke and fumes from downward, BUT THIS FEATURES IS NOT NECESSARY. AN OVERHEAD RANGE HOOD WITH FAN CAN BE USED. Down draft stoves save space above the oven and/or are typically used in a kitchen island where a hood would be impractical due to high ceilings or one is not able to retro-fit with a range exhaust hood. Venting fumes / smoke is important during the cooking, especially burning of oil / food; and for getting rid of smells like fish and onions while cooking. A down-draft cooktop is typically installed in a new house in the kitchen where ventilation shafts in an island or under a counter are are already installed. BUT THIS FEATURES IS NOT NECESSARY.
