Leland Holiday Original Framed Navajo Acrylic Painting on Wood 15 X 15 Excellent Condition. One of a Kind. Purchased in Santa Fe, NM, in the 1990s and framed later in Phoenix. $75 FIRM PRICE PER FRAMED ORIGINAL PAINTING. About the artist: Holiday is a young man with a big reputation. Early in his career, he became known as a Navajo Folk Artist. Actually, according to Leland, it was all an accident. Everyone in my family knew how to make baskets, but I was uninterested. I was just a kid, and we didnt have enough money to buy toys, so my brother and I started making our own. People called them folk art, but they were just toys. But he did recognize a good opportunity. With the help of Farmington art dealer Jack Beasley, he began selling his work to many top dealers and museums. He was featured in several major museum shows at the Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe and the Autry National Center in Los Angeles. His work is sold in many of the Southwests finest Museums and galleries. His work with Mr. Beasley exposed him to classical art, urban art, and modern Impressionism. He was drawn to the urban art he saw, but never considered painting as a career. He continued to experiment with carvings, but moved away from Folk Art. I dont want to be classified, he explains. I want to be an artist who can break boundaries. As a teenager, he often broke traditional boundaries. I would carve or paint things that were not supposed to be painted. I had a lot of the older people upset with me. I was pushing against the traditional way of life, but I respect it more now. Today, his paintings are shown in galleries throughout the United States.

The tradition of making pennywhistles in the form of a horse, a horserider, and a bird goes back to ancient time and has to do with the agricultural calendar holidays. Later on, little figures lost their spiritual meaning and became just toys for children, the making of which would become an artistic handicraft. Old Russian folk Art Handcrafts. Made in the village of Dymkovo near Kirov (former Vyatka) Molded from a mixture of local potters clay and river sand. The parts of a toy are fastened together with watery clay. After the toys are dried and tempered in a furnace, they are whitewashed with chalk diluted in milk, then painted with tempera (before 1953, the artists used aniline paints ground with eggs) in 4 to 10 (or more) colors, and decorated with gold leafs 24 Karat.

Alphonse Emil Tuffy Leemans Oil Painting Signed lower right Oil on board - Framed, 46 in. x 31 in. Painting has been cleaned. Provenance: Former Touchdown Club Collection, Washington, DC Leemans (November 12, 1912 – January 19, 1979) was an American professional football player who was a fullback and halfback who played on both offense and defense for the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL). A native of Superior, Wisconsin, Leemans played college football for the Oregon Ducks and the George Washington Colonials. He was drafted by the Giants in the second round of the 1936 NFL draft and played eight years for the Giants from 1936 to 1943. He led the NFL as a rookie with 830 rushing yards and was selected as a first-team All-Pro in 1936 and 1939. He was also selected to play in the Pro Bowl in 1938 and 1941 and helped lead the Giants to the 1938 NFL Championship and the 1939 and 1941 NFL Championship Games. He was named in 1969 to the NFL 1930s All-Decade Team and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1978. *There are five other pieces of football greats from this collection for sale.* PROVENANCE: Former Touchdown Club Collection, Washington, DC Arthur “Dutch” Bergman, a former Washington Redskins coach, opened the Touchdown Club in 1935. This artwork once adorned the wall at Bergman’s club, which closed in the 1990s. About the Artist GARNET W. JEX (American, 1895-1979) Mr. Jex was a prolific painter, working in oils and watercolors. He did a series of portraits for the Washington Touchdown Club of famous athletes. There were thirteen in all and included such football greats as Jim Thorpe, Knute Rockne, Red Grange, Cliff Battles, and Slingin Sammy Baugh. He painted the portraits from photographs, and the backgrounds are in Jex style, often with landscapes showing the campuses where the players had made their reputations. The portraits adorned the walls in the Hall of Fame of the former Washington Touchdown Club. Mr. Jex was born in Kent, Ohio. He grew up in Washington, and graduated from McKinley High School. After serving with the Army in World War I, he earned bachelors and masters degrees in fine arts from George Washington University. He was a medical illustrator for the Army Medical Corps, art editor of Nature magazine, and a free-lance artist and teacher before joining the Public Health Service. Mr. Jex was a former president of the Arts Club of Washington and a longtime member of the Landscape Club of Washington. He was a founding member of a group of Civil War enthusiasts, which he called The Crackpates, which preceded the Civil War Round Table of Washington. He served as president of that organization during 1967-68. Earlier, he had received the Round Tables Gold Medal. Mr. Jex, who lived in Arlington, also had received the Superior Service Award of the USPHS.
