AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE IS AN ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL PROFESSIONALLY-CREATED GICLEE CANVAS-PAINTING BY MARANA & TUCSON, ARIZONA, ARTIST PAUL SHELDON (1947-2012) TITLED “SONORAN LIGHT SHOW” THAT DISPLAYS A CONTEMPORARY FAUVE-LIKE EXPRESSIONIST SOUTHWESTERN DESERT LANDSCAPE IN WHICH THE COLORS OF PURPLE, DARK BLUE, AND YELLOW ARE DOMINANT AND THEN ENHANCED BY ROUGH-HEWN SONORAN DESERT MESQUITE WOOD FRAME! Please Note: This is a giclee canvas-painting and NOT an actual original painting. To this end, the artist Paul Sheldon (now deceased) had collaborated with his gallery representative Cobalt Fine Arts Gallery of Tubac, Arizona, to create high-grade facsimile giclee canvas-paintings that look and feel like real original paintings. When this particular giclee canvas-painting “Sonoran Light Show” was initially available, the Cobalt Fine Arts Gallery price was $1,500.00 (and this did not include the cost of professional framing). Dimensions: The giclee canvas-painting itself measures approximately twenty four inches (24”) in height by thirty three inches (33”) in width. The overall dimensions of the Sonoran Desert Mesquite wooden frame are approximately twenty seven inches (27”) in height by thirty six and one half inches (36 1/2”) in width. Signed with the artist’s facsimile signature in the bottom right corner. Condition: Excellent and clean condition for both the painting and the frame. Remember, the rough-hewn Sonoran Desert Mesquite wood frame still retains its original bark surface and consequently has a naturally distressed appearance as it was left in its raw state. Price: $700.00 (firm and cash only) To view the Paul Sheldon Arizona Sonoran Desert giclee art canvas-painting available for purchase here, please send an email to John to arrange a time that is convenient for you. Thank you. Please Note: This is a cash only, local pick-up transaction in the town of Cave Creek just north of Scottsdale. You will need your own transportation. This Paul Sheldon Arizona Sonoran Desert giclee art canvas-painting is safely stored in a private home and is easily accessible. Lastly, this item is available as long as this advertisement is up and running. There is no need to send text or email messages asking if it is still available. PAUL SHELDON 1947-2012 BIO (the following is a complete reprinting of Paul Sheldon’s obituary originally published in the Arizona Daily Star newspaper on Aug. 8, 2012) Paul Stephen Sheldon Age 64, passed away suddenly on August 1, 2012 at his home in Marana, Arizona. Paul is survived by his two children, Nickolas Sheldon and Jayme Harkins; his parents, Raymond K. Sheldon and Harriett W. Sheldon and his sisters, Pamela Crowder and Susan Vender. A prominent artist who specialized in western art, Paul was born on Christmas Day of 1947 in Burlington, Iowa. His family moved to Tucson in 1958 and Paul fell in love with the Southwest. He developed his artistic skills at a young age and continued to study at Northern Arizona University and then the University of Arizona. Paul was married in 1978 to Terry Sheldon for 24 years, during which time they raised their family while he advanced his fine art career. Paul also spent time camping, taking photos and playing live music. Paul loved his art and was happiest when he could share it with others. He was well known in Tucson and the greater art community. His paintings have appeared in several galleries throughout the Southwest, he has been featured in several prominent magazines, and many of his murals have become familiar Tucson icons. During the last year of his life, in the midst of multiple projects and escalating success, Paul dedicated time to teach a weekly art class at the La Posada Retirement Community of Green Valley. Paul will be remembered with love at an informal gathering at the Jane Hamilton Gallery on Sunday, August 12, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., 2890 E. Skyline Drive Suite 180. (the following is an excerpt from the article titled “Paul Sheldon – Art of the West” written by Johnny D. Boggs and published on the website called HistoryNet) “I’ve always loved the history and color of the Southwest and feel blessed to be able to do what I do,” Sheldon says. The artist was 10 years old when his family moved from Iowa to Arizona in 1958, and he was immediately drawn to the state’s history and geography. “It was like going to Mars, or at least to a Western TV show,” he recalls. “We used to drive around whenever we could in the family ’57 Chevy station wagon and matching 15-foot camper trailer to see all the beautiful and fascinating sites in Arizona and New Mexico. It was fun to imagine what it was like back whenever. We used to camp and hike at Cochise Stronghold in southeastern Arizona.” He was also drawn to art. “Ted DeGrazia, who was good with color, was a big deal in Tucson then, and I went to his studio,” explains Sheldon. “So, I started painting in middle school at the age of 13, then had art every year in high school and got a painting scholarship to Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff in 1966.” Many Western artists seem stuck in earth tones when they paint Western history, but Sheldon’s works are vibrant, alive, refreshing—a blend of, say, contemporary artist Carrie Fell and the late, legendary Maynard Dixon. “During college, there were a lot of people doing abstracts and even psychedelic art, so I learned about ‘nonobjective’ painting and got some awards,” recalls Sheldon, whose works appear at The Max Gallery in Tucson and Cobalt Fine Arts Gallery in Tubac, Ariz. “I was good at color first,” he says. “Later, during the ’70s, I saw artists using these bright colors in contemporary Western art. Mostly all were paintings of Indians and landscapes, like the work of Fritz Scholder, John Nieto and my high school friend Lawrence Lee. I thought, Why not try doing this with cowboys, too? And I had a niche, and I liked it. Surprisingly, so do the cowboys I’ve met.” He also discovered a way to give his paintings a three-dimensional effect. “This was a surprising side effect of simply trying to create depth in my paintings,” Sheldon says. “I was concerned that the simpler shapes and graphic-like style would cause my work to look too flat. So I used a combination of techniques, such as vibrating complementaries and warmer colors in the foregrounds against cooler colors and horizontal plains in the backgrounds.” How he conducts research depends on the subject. “I go to roundups, rodeos, rural areas, the library, old photo archives,” he says. “I have a picture ‘morgue’ I’ve been building on for 30 years in an old file cabinet. Even Google searches are helpful.” His paintings are abstract in some ways, realistic in others and always bold. How does he describe it? Some kind of Expressionism, I suppose, but not abstracted,” he says. “Maybe ‘Fauvistic Contemporary Western Expressionism’ is good.” (the following information is courtesy the website for Cobalt Fine Arts Gallery of Tubac, Arizona) Back in the 1950s, the image of the cowboy on television was for many the object of childhood fantasies and dreams of riding the range with a six-gun strapped to their hip. Paul Sheldon was no different from many millions of youngsters growing up in the Midwest, except that he was fortunate enough to move with his family to southern Arizona at a time when the cowboy was still very much a part of the local scene. His family would travel around the Southwest, and given Pauls fancy for western lore, the real life images he saw stimulated his creative spirit to such a level that he began to draw and paint by the time he entered his teen years. Truly in his case, his new surroundings served as the catalyst to bring out the artist in him. Paul Sheldon is a modern artist. His western scenes are not photo representational portrayals of cowboy life or of the bold western landscape, nor are they impressionistic or abstract. Rather they are bright, energetic and stylized images that are still easily recognizable scenes of western life and landscape, but painted in a daring, fresh manner, utilizing a mix of vivid rust, purple, magenta and pink juxtaposed with deep earthen tones and highlighted by warm yellows, beiges and rich, but cool blues or greens. His subjects are often outlined for added effect, making them appear three dimensional, standing out in front of the backgrounds. His landscapes are equally brilliant, their rich colors enhancing the beauty of a desert or mountain landscape. To best understand Paul Sheldons distinctive style and bold use of color, it is necessary to read his own description of his art. Color has always been my strongest suit but composition is almost as much fun. Theres something special and emotional about the interplay of bright colors in a good composition. These southwestern images I like to use seem to thrive on complimentary colors and rhythm too.
