Great piece for someone who wants virgin wood! Because of age, the original finish has mostly peeled off. The rest comes off extremely easily with a sanding pad. I already finished the top. The wood is maple (with curly maple areas). Locally made by famous woodworker in Asheville (now deceased ~ although his shop is still here and his apprentice now runs it). Most likely special order with that unusual top piece (I believe he only did special orders). Large and heavy. Solid wood but original finish peeling (I have since used a kitchen scrub to remove almost all of the top finish which is a light curly maple wood. There was never paint put on this wood (just some kind of finish which comes off easily with any abrasive scrub. It must be old! Other than that, excellent. The insides of all the drawers are as new. The name of the maker is burnt into the wood. This was his signature branding. Extremely heavy piece of solid wood. Let me know if you need precise measurements. There is only one coat of whatever was on there originally and it is peeling very easily and would just need hand work (scrapes off very easily) to get it off (rather than chemicals or sanders, etc). The wood has beautiful lines of curly maple running through it in spots. Stanley was the owner of Stanley A. Briggs Custom Furniture for 61 years, working until the age of 92 and retiring on May 30, 2019. Stanley designed and built furniture to furnish several homes in Western North Carolina, Ocala Florida, and has crafted furniture in almost every state. Some of his accomplishments include the pulpit and alter furniture for Billy Graham at the Cove.

These boxes are made with three-quarter inch alder sides, a quarter inch cedar top, and then the base is a grid of eighth inch alder strips with various bracing bars holding everything together in a grid shape – the outside bracing bars go transversely and the inside bars go longitudinally. These are amazing boxes; they have a natural Osmo brand oil finish and not a usual polyurethane. If you want them to look super fancy, you could sand the outside more. The insides are not finished with any finish - they’re literally just raw wood. There’s three different boxes and they’re all fantastic but each have random little problems like (1) the first one has a latch where the little silver rod thing falls off *ONLY when unlatched* (because it’s all kind of cheap Home Depot hardware even though everything closes and latches tightly), (2) the second one has a piece of cedar on the top that bowed inwardly really bad, and (3) the third box just has a couple uneven places of oil finish on the outside. Lastly, the inside of a couple of the boxes have a little bit of excess glue or epoxy because a couple of the boxes had large gaps filled with epoxy and in a couple places the glue leaked inside the box. However, they’re fantastic boxes. Really they’re just great for anyone who wants a nice wooden box to hold whatever fancy things. I hope they don’t get treated like a hardware box or thrown off a boat while fishing or something, but yeah, they’re basically good for anything that doesn’t involve the box getting broken or having heavy stuff put on top of it because they’re very complex and strong composite design, but they definitely wouldn’t be able to hold up a big metal thing. I made these boxes but don’t use them and am happy to sell even at a low price. It is 40$ per box. The outside dimensions are near 19x20x4.
