Designed by Yves Béhar, this SAYL chair is one of the most versatile pieces that Herman Miller has ever made. It’s in excellent condition. Fewer parts, less material, and still everything a chair should be… Beauty, elegance, respect: The Herman Miller folks asked designer Yves Béhar to design a chair that would incorporate everything the company is known for - beautiful design, first-class ergonomics, elegant engineering, and respect for the environment. Suspending a chair: Béhar, who calls San Francisco home, began by looking at designs that deliver the most with the least. And then he took a look at his city’s best-known landmark: the Golden Gate Bridge. Béhar wondered, could the engineering principles of a suspension bridge be applied to a chair? The notion of using a suspension tower to support an unframed suspension back meant that the elastomer material could be stretched in a way that provides the greatest tension at points where support is needed and the least in areas that would allow for the most expansive range of motion. Designed to use less, yet deliver so much: Sayl side chairs can move seamlessly from desk, to conference room, to office, to living room, and back again. They have been designed to take up less visual space, and they stack on top of each other for easy storage. Elegant anywhere: Sayl side chairs can work with any décor. And the organic shape of the Sayl side-chair back makes it elegant anywhere, from every angle. Eco-dematerialized design: Herman Miller and Yves Béhar are big on environmental responsibility in design. With Sayl, they went a step farther, starting out by thinking about what could be removed from a simple side chair. The result was a lightweight chair. Structural components are hollowed out, reducing the weight and volume of material. Awards: Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) awards the Sayl side chair a Bronze Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA) in the category of Office and Productivity. Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) awards a Silver Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA) to the Sayl family of seating.
