This is a one of a kind piece painted by Salvador Gonzales Escalona Signed lower left Purchased directly from the artist in Cuba Single non smoking owner Approximately 41 x 30 framed Frame is also one of a kind with exquisite detailing About the artist: Salvador González Escalona, known to all as Salvador, the celebrated artist and cultural promoter of the Callejón de Hamel Community Sociocultural Project, from the Havana neighbourhood of Cayo Hueso, has died in Havana (16 April 2021) leaving an indelible mark on Cuban culture, essentially in the visual arts and traditional popular culture, to which he was closely ed to his last days. Born in Camagüey but having made Havana his home, Salvador found in the capital’s Cayo Hueso neighbourhood a space for making art and there he devoted much of his life to the development of community culture and the promotion of traditional popular culture. He was self-taught and that did not prevent him from making art part of his life. He had his first exhibition ‘Arte Popular Cubano‘ at the Museo de Artes Decorativas in Havana in 1968. He focused his artistic concerns in the visual arts, reflecting in his work the influence of the greatest exponents of Mexican muralism Diego Rivera and Orozco, together with his understanding of the rich African heritage rooted in Cuban culture. Salvador described his work as a mix of surrealism, cubism and abstract art, making paintings, murals and sculptures that have been exhibited all over the world. His name acquired a certain relevance amongst Cuban artists due precisely to his work as a muralist, and this is clear in Callejón de Hamel, that space that for him was like a large gallery, a vital space for the creation and protection of Afro-Cuban traditions. From 1990 Salvador started creating murals and sculptures in the side street known as Callejón de Hamel, near the University of Havana. He used scrap metal to make sculptures, and he used whatever type of paint was available for the murals. He was inspired by local residents and visitors to continue his work, and gradually the street was transformed into an lively Afro-Cuban centre. Today there are workshops for local children to learn painting. Every Sunday there are rumba performances, and every Friday live music in the street. Callejon de Hamel is located between Calles Espada and Aramburu. A staunch defender of the essence of the nation’s identity, Salvador has left an indelible mark, the fruit of his deep commitment to his community.

Excellent condition - single non smoking owner Approx 48 high x 35 wide framed in glass - Image size approx 35 x 23.5 #144/150 - Limited Edition Lithograph Hand signed & titled & numbered by the artist G.H. ROTHE 1935-2007 G.H. Rothe was renowned as master of the mezzotint. She combines technical mastery with inspired imagination. Rothe studied in art history, human anatomy, gold smithing and extensive drawing culminated in her discovery of the mezzotint technique Her years of research and constant practice supplied the perfect medium for her vast repertoire of images. 1935- Born in Poland, and despite growing up amidst a world at war, Rothe s work in the arduous and difficult medium of Mezzotint symbolizes all the joy and passion of life. After studying painting and art history at Pforzhiem Academy of Design in 1956, Rothe didnt t produce her first Mezzotint until after moving to New York in 1972. A proven master at the painstaking process of Mezzotint that requires sometimes 500 hours and more to produce a single image Rothe s work enhances private, public, and corporate collections all over the world.G.H. Rothe was the renowned as master of the mezzotint and as one of the worlds greatest living artists. She combines technical mastery with inspired imagination. She was born in 1935 in Beuthen, Germany (ceded to Poland in 1945) and her studies in art history, human anatomy, goldsmithing and extensive drawing culminated in her discovery of the mezzotint technique. Impelled to revive this most difficult technique of printmaking led to an invention in 1972 never accomplished before in mezzotint: transparency, and she found it. Her years of research and constant practice supplied the perfect medium for her vast repertoire of images.Ludwig von Siegen, the first mezzotint engraver would have been impressed. He wrote in 1642, There is no living artist who could guess how this engraving has been executed. Yet more impressive is G.H. Rothes zeal; she completed over 70,000 mezzotints.I carve my images into copperplates directly with a diamond. Then I pit the surface with a chisel-like tool called a rocker. When the ground work is done, I use a steel burnisher quite extensively to shape my images as one would do in a fine barr relief but working in reverse. After I pull a proof print from the copperplate, I cover the surface anew with fine pitted holes using the rocker, eliminating thought in action, practicing Karma Yoga. The experience of layering images and the x-ray shapes is guided by the minds eye. I feel but cannot see the picture underneath the second layer of pits. As the essence of life is an unknown force, I see when I dont look.
