If you’ve ever seen the movie “The King’s Speech,” which won an Academy Award for Best Picture in 2011, this is the event covered on the front page of this 1937 DETROIT TIMES newspaper. George VI (formerly Edward) really didn’t want to be king because of his speech impediment. Because he stuttered so badly, the British government protected him from public broadcasts, and eventually hired a speech tutor to help him. This paper includes the entire first section (20 pages) and has many photos from the coronation. On the front page is a photo of Brits waiting at Trafalgar Square for the coronation proceedings. At the very bottom of the front page is a small insert urging Detroit-area readers to “Save This Paper” because of its historical importance. The front page has a few small tears where the two folds met, but it doesn’t affect the text or the rest of the paper. I placed it in a protective backing and cover to keep it preserved. My favorite part of the paper, though, is the inside, that contained all of the Detroit-area advertising from 82 years ago: Sears, Hudson’s People’s Outfitting, Bond Clothes, Kerns, Crowley’s, local Ford Dealers, Chesterfield smokes, Cunningham’s, and Wonder Wheat Bread. My favorite one is on the back page advertising Pepsi-Cola (5 cents), calling it “A Sparkling Bracing Beverage” and “Refreshing and Healthful.”

This 80+ year old vintage set of peachy-pink-orange, often iridescent glassware typically found in compotes and fruit bowls is called Marigold Carnival Glass. Produced extensively from the early 1900s through the 1970s, this set is likely from the 1940s based on the individual who acquired it. It is known for its bright orange-gold, iridescent sheen applied to pressed glass, often featuring patterns like grapes, leaves, or florals. It is distinct from other colored depression glass due to its attractive metallic coating. The large single three-footed bowl is 8 ½” wide and 4” tall. The six individual compote dishes are 4 ½” wide and 2” tall. The central design motif is a butterfly which is surrounded by leafy vines with berries [ raspberries ? ]. This decoration appears both on the larger, central dish as well as on the individual pieces. Common pieces found in this style are footed bowls, compotes, candy dishes, and serving plates. Even though the copyright date says 1909 on the first page, the information is really intended for 1910. Page 3 has an article by Teddy Roosevelt on the importance of the American farmer. Pages 8 and 9 have information on Standard Time followed by an article about how planets might affect crops. Each month has regional weather info to help with harvesting plans. On page 22 is a section on Antidotes for Poison followed by a section on “Weights of Everyday Things.” There’s a phot on page 26 of a farmer using the Osborne Peg Toothed Harrow (of course, made by International Harvester) and on page 28 iOS a photos of a farmer using the Osborne Mower Cutting attachment. Page 36 has info on crop rotation. It’s followed by kind of a goofy section called “Propsy the Farm Elf.” It’s followed by on article on page 45 about the leading dairy breeds of 1910. First Aid is covered on page 48 followed by a section on choosing silo sizes. Choosing the best trees to plant comes right after this part. There’s also a section on the proper way to lay drain tiles followed by an article on alfalfa. The last regular page has a calendar for 1911. This 80 page booklet is a combination of International Harvester advertising and helpful hints to farmers. To the company’s credit, most of the almanac is informational. The booklet measures 5 x 8 .inches and has a lighter stock cardboard cover. On the upper left corner is a hole punch with the original string running through it for easy hanging. As you can see from the photos, it’s in really nice shape.

This is a really neat crock and unusual because almost it has a beige color to it, with brown cursive lettering.. I’ve always seen crocks from this dairy as a light gray stoneware with blue lettering (same logo). I have no idea about the company other than what I read on the label—that it started in 1885 and the owner called himself “The Butter and Egg Man.” The crock measures nearly six inches in diameter (5 7/8 to be exact) and and stands 3 inches high, and is in very good shape, as you can see from the photos. It’s a nice looking piece almost like pottery, and would be great to display and/or double up as a place to put stuff from the counter.
