saleEarly 1900s, actual photo postcards of Belle Isle, Detroit
Angela Williams
Early 1900s, actual photo postcards of Belle Isle, Detroit

Although not dated, these two real picture postcards are from somewhere between 1909 and 1911. The first one shows the hustle and bustle of Belle Isle’s Central Avenue. Judging from the appearance of the visitors, it looks like they were taking in a leisurely Sunday afternoon at the park. The handwriting at the top is part of the card’s printing. On the back of the Central Ave. card is something interesting. It was all set to send, but it was never sent, leaving the original Ben Franklin stamp unmarked. Maybe it was not marked because the sender didn’t have the complete name of the city on the address, just “City.” Back in the early 1900s, deer were scarce in southern Michigan. Also, Belle Isle had its own zoo at the time. So the deer pictured on the second card are either part of the zoo or allowed to roam freely throughout the park. Like the first card, this one was never sent. It was taken home as a souvenir, courtesy of The Detroit News, “The Great Daily of Michigan.” As you can see, both cards are in good shape and have been stored away carefully through the ages.

sale132 year old Advertising Calendar: Dated 1894
Rebecca Wright
132 year old Advertising Calendar: Dated 1894

This original die-cut lithographed advertising calendar from the 19th century measures 8 1/2 inches tall by 6 inches wide. On the front bottom left is a copyright date (1893) by the Knapple Lithograph Co. (as shown). On the back is the entire calendar for 1894. When you open the calendar, there’s some oxidation/discoloring on the borders that matches the design and cut of the front of the calendar. Luckily, it has no effect on the graphics. On the left side of the inside portion of the calendar is a list of insurance rates. For instance, 50 cents a week for a person aged 21 would insure them for $930, big bucks 125 years ago. Also, the major dates for the holidays are listed. Back then, Memorial Day was called Decoration Day. In 1894, the Metropolitan Insurance Company’s offices were in Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Bay City/Saginaw. I think it’s safe to say that only a few copies—if any— of this calendar probably exist, especially in such great condition. As you can see from the photos, the colors and graphics are bold and clear,

saleTwo German Handgemalt (“Hand Painted”) Steins
Sarah Torres
Two German Handgemalt (“Hand Painted”) Steins

Vintage steins that were stamped “Handgemalt” were made in the Westerwald region , a low mountain-range region in western Germany. The area is known for its high quality clay. One of the steins is marked “Munchen” (Munich) and has three very colorful scenes. It also has a bark-like handle with a working pewter lid. It is stamped “Handgemalt” on the bottom and is in mint shape. The other stein is not marked, but it’s obviously made by the same company. It has a very small rim nick, but otherwise in very nice shape. The scenes on the stein are from Floriansplatz, in southern Germany near the Austrian border. One of the scenes on this stein is called “Olym Skistsdion”, which was the site of the 1934 Olympic Ski Jump competition. Both steins are approximately 10 inches high and would display beautifully.

sale6 Rare Pierce’s Memorandum Account Books: 1880s, early 1900s
Kathleen Davis
6 Rare Pierce’s Memorandum Account Books: 1880s, early 1900s

R. V. Pierce went to medical school at “Eclectic Medial College of Cincinnati” (which should have been a red flag) and began practicing “medicine” in 1862 in Pennsylvania. He moved to Buffalo, NY, in 1867. In Buffalo, Pierce developed patent potions and marketed them through mail order sales. One of his products, “Dr. Pierce’s Smart Weed,” sold over a million bottles a year. Pierce also claimed his medicines could cure tuberculosis, liver problems, and “women’s complaints.” Several of the pages have fake testimonials as well. Eventually, Pierce became known as “The Prince of Quacks.” Sadly, he became very rich. In the late 1870s, Pierce created Pierce’s Memorandum Account Book for Farmers, Mechanics, and—whot the hell—All People.” He gave these booklets to customers as a “present.” This “present” was a 48 page advertisement for Pierce’s quack medicines disguised as a memo book for each month.. Some of the booklets here have actual memos written in them. Five of these memo books have the same cover design. On the front are illustrations of a farmer, a mechanic, and a blacksmith. On the back is an illustration of Pierce’s 6-story “World Dispensary” in Buffalo. Two of the booklets have local distributors listed: one from Clinton, OH, and the other from Naugatuck, MI. Each 48-page memo book measures 5 5/8 x 3 3/8 inches, perfect for putting in a pocket. The dates are wide ranging and include memo books from 1878, 1888, 1902, 1906, and 1924.. The company also made a pocket notebook for women, called “Ladies Notebook and Calendar.” It came out monthly. This one is from March, 1887. It is in great shape and the rarest of the bunch. I’ve only seen a few of these and they all had condition issues. These six memo books give a good glimpse into the false advertising of over a 120 years ago that made some people rich. NOTE: Because I live in Michigan, we can easily arrange shipping to the Buffalo area.

Two Early 1900s Holland (MI) Rusk advertising blotters

I purchased these from an estate in Holland, MI, years ago. The Holland Rusk Co. began in the late 1800s in Holland, MI. Rusk is a dry and crunchy round biscuit—basically twice-baked bread. It’s used in a lot of recipes and as a type of toast. In the Netherlands, rusk is used as a breakfast food, something like toast. It’s also used as a type of shortcake base. These two advertising blotters were put out as a promotional item for the company. They were obviously never used based on their condition. The blotters measure 8 1/4 x 3 3/4 inches and are made of a light cardboard. We could arrange shipping if preferable.
