It utilizes substantial cold-molded construction consisting of four layers of Atlantic cedar laminated with epoxy to approximately 1¾ inches in finished thickness, supported by laminated Douglas fir framing. Major structural areas were reinforced with lightweight tungsten gussets. Tom Joyal acquired the unfinished hull and ultimately transformed it into AMERICA, drawing inspiration from photographs of the historic steam-powered passenger vessel COMET. Joyal’s background in architectural salvage became part of the boat itself. Throughout AMERICA are genuine reclaimed architectural elements including antique stained glass, salvaged cypress, historic windows, vintage doors, old hardware and handcrafted woodwork. Some of the stained glass dates to the 1860s. Other architectural elements incorporated into the vessel date back even further. This isn’t a new boat decorated to look old. Much of the history you see aboard AMERICA is real. DIESEL-ELECTRIC PROPULSION AMERICA utilizes an unconventional diesel-electric propulsion system rather than a traditional direct mechanical drivetrain.
