Antique c.1925 Louis XVI Revival / Art Deco Mahogany Vanity – Red Marble & Tall Mirror $1100 o.b.o. Striking early 20th-century twin-pedestal dressing table / vanity, dating approximately 1920–1930, with a large architectural mirror, richly figured mahogany veneer, decorative inlay, period hardware, and a fitted natural red marble center top. The design represents the transition between French Louis XVI / Neoclassical Revival and early Art Deco, combining traditional floral, ribbon, garland and scroll ornament with the strong symmetry, geometric veneer work and streamlined architectural proportions emerging during the 1920s. Comparable French dressing tables of the period were produced in mahogany with marble and prominent mirrors. The vanity features two symmetrical pedestals, each with four bow-front drawers above an enclosed lower cabinet. The drawer fronts display attractive book-matched/chevron mahogany veneer with contrasting decorative banding. Original or period-correct brass/bronze hardware includes ornate round pulls and a decorative ring/drop pull incorporating classical floral, swag and garland motifs. The center is fitted with a removable, approximately ½-inch-thick natural brecciated red marble slab, polished around its perimeter and displaying dramatic burgundy-red coloration with white calcite veining and darker mineral inclusions. The stone is consistent in appearance with the family of red ornamental marbles historically quarried in southern France, although the specific quarry has not been established. The marble underside retains fascinating original workshop markings, including ruled fitting/layout lines, circled production numbers reading “962 / P198,” and an old cursive inscription. These have been deliberately left untouched and have not been cleaned or altered. Above the vanity is an unusually tall arched mirror in a mahogany frame, finished with beaded molding and an elaborate carved crest incorporating floral and foliate ornament, scrollwork, ribbon/bow decoration and a central oval medallion. The mirror assembly retains concealed period production markings: “4874” stenciled in black on the inside of the backer board, with separate “4 874 4” numbers impressed/stamped into the rear of the wooden mirror frame. Their manufacturer has not been identified. The curved center apron carries additional beaded molding and carved scroll appliqués, while the lower cabinetry terminates in tapered feet with restrained carved detailing. Approximate dimensions: - Overall: 56 W × 18 D × 78 H - Mirror: 26 W × 58 H - Pedestals: 16 W × 18 D × 49 H each - Upper pedestal sections: 15 H, approximately 12 deep at center of bow front - Lower pedestal sections: 34 H - Center/table opening: approximately 26 W - Table surface: approximately 20 from floor Condition: Good antique condition for its age, but not mint. The vanity is approximately a century old and shows appropriate evidence of use, including finish wear, scratches/scuffs, small veneer and trim imperfections, variations in drawer fit, and several minor cosmetic and structural weaknesses. NOTE: There are eight bow front drawers. Two of them are missing the back portion. The piece retains considerable period character and has not been aggressively refinished. The concealed workshop markings on the marble and mirror components have been preserved. The mirror can be removed from the vanity for transportation, and the marble center top is also removable. Date: approximately 1920–1930, probably c.1925 Style: Louis XVI / French Neoclassical Revival with transitional Art Deco influence Primary wood: Mahogany / figured mahogany veneer Top: Natural brecciated red marble Hardware: Decorated brass/bronze Maker: Unknown / unmarked Origin: Probably Continental European; French attribution is possible but not definitively established. This is a substantial statement piece with beautiful old-world cabinetry, unusual architectural proportions and considerable surviving period detail. It would work equally well as a functional vanity, dressing-room centerpiece, or decorative antique.
