Vintage Antique 1890s Embossed Tin Camelback Trunk Eclectic Maximalist Victorian Industrial A Beautiful Piece of Traveling History - Ready for a New Home! I came across this incredible late 1800s Victorian era ornamental embossed tin camelback trunk right here in the Seattle area. We can only imagine how it got here or what adventures it has been on before then. If you love antique pieces with genuine character, this is a phenomenal find that doesnt take up a massive amount of space. This trunk features a high, gracefully curved humpback (or camelback) lid design. Historically, these rounded lids were highly prized because baggage handlers on steamships and trains were forced to place them at the very top of the luggage pile so they wouldnt tip over, protecting the expensive embossed tin exterior and structural wood slats from being crushed by flat-top trunks. Excellent Structural Condition: Considering its age, this trunk is in remarkably solid shape. The heavy wood slats and stout iron straps are structurally sound and ready for use. The leather handles are intact although perhaps they could use a little antique leather conditioner and probably shouldnt be relied upon for heavy lifting. The exterior boasts a gorgeous, authentic weathered patina that tells the story of its 140-year journey across the country. You can absolutely leave it exactly as-is for that rugged, primitive look, or it serves as the perfect canvas for a light technical restoration. A gentle cleaning with mineral spirits and boiled linseed oil on the wood perhaps, and a fresh coat of clear finish toner would beautifully bring out the intricate detailing of the embossed tin and the rich grain of the wood slats. No Musty Odor: The biggest deterrent with old trunks is usually a damp smell. This one has been kept dry and does not smell like mildew. It is clean and ready to store your blankets, board games, or winter clothes. Ideal Size: Unlike massive, flat-top wardrobe trunks that are difficult to fit into a room, this compact size is perfect to use as a unique coffee table, an entryway console, or an end-of-bed blanket chest. Pure Character: It is a beautiful, rugged survivor of the era of steamships and the Transcontinental Railroad expansion. It is growing at a breathless pace, rebuilding itself in magnificent brick and stone after a great fire destroyed it a few years ago. Ships fill the harbor, and new rail lines arrive constantly, bringing people from all over the world who are eager to build something from nothing. The future here feels boundless. Yet, I must confess to you that a deep trepidation sits in my chest alongside this optimism. I have very little money left in my pockets, the language is still a daily battle, and I am surrounded by strangers in a raw frontier. At night, looking out at the dark waters and the massive, looming pine trees, the sheer distance between myself and the home I left behind feels heavy. But the worry is eclipsed by the sheer belief that tomorrow holds opportunity. A humorous, if frustrating, reminder of my current state occurred just this morning, highlighting a great contrast in how things are made these days. As I was walking down near the muddy waterfront docks, I noticed a sudden chill and discovered a completely faulty seam in my only good pair of trousers. The stitching had entirely given way through no fault of my own! It left me standing there on the wooden boardwalk, patch-working myself together and wishing mightily that there was a proper merchant in this town—a store that stood firmly behind the quality of their products and treated a customer with absolute fairness, rather than just taking a mans hard-earned coins and leaving him with loose threads. I could not help but contrast these miserable trousers with the fabulous, robust trunk I purchased during my time working in Michigan. That grand chest has been an absolute marvel; its heavy wood, stout iron straps, and embossed tin have taken a brutal beating on trains, steamships, and muddy platforms across this continent, yet it remains as solid as the day it was built. It has reliably protected every single thing I own through all my adventures, proving that true craftsmanship does exist if a maker actually cares. Perhaps one day this city will have a dry goods store that operates with that same enduring integrity. I think of you all daily and pray that the harvest in Alunda was kind to you this season.
