About the Role Philly AIDS Thrift, a nonprofit thrift store supporting over 50 local HIV/AIDS organizations, is hiring a Part-Time Housewares Donation Processor. This position includes a consistent weekly shift on Wednesdays, with additional training shifts through the spring and the opportunity for expanded seasonal hours during the summer (June–August). Quick Overview - Immediate need: Wednesdays (11:00 AM–8:00 PM, ongoing shift) - Training shifts on Tuesdays and Thursdays (April–June) - Additional seasonal/temporary hours available June–August - Physically active role - Strong pricing instincts and resale knowledge preferred - Fast-paced, high-volume donation environment Position Details You will assist in the intake, sorting, processing, and pricing of all non-clothing donations, including housewares, bric-a-brac, furniture, art, and media (books, records, DVDs, etc.). This is a fast-paced position with a high volume of incoming donations, requiring strong time management and efficiency. You will also support general retail operations, including: - Operating the cash register - Store cleaning and upkeep - Stocking shelves and maintaining inventory - Researching higher-priced or specialty items - Completing other routine store tasks as needed You must be able to independently assess value and distinguish between everyday items and high-end, designer, vintage, mid-century, and antique goods. You will also help guide and support volunteers by assigning tasks and showing them store procedures. As a representative of Philly AIDS Thrift, you will interact with donors, customers, and volunteers in a courteous and professional manner. This is a physically demanding position. You will be lifting, moving, and processing donations throughout your shift (up to 50 lbs independently; heavier items are team-lifted with assistance). Primary Responsibilities - Greet and assist donors and customers - Sort and evaluate donated items - Research and assign appropriate resale prices - Tag and merchandise items on the sales floor - Maintain clean, organized, and well-stocked sales areas - Guide and delegate tasks to volunteers and volunteer groups Qualifications - Knowledge of resale pricing for household goods, kitchenware, media, electronics, furniture, and collectibles - Ability to distinguish between everyday and high-value items (e.g., IKEA, Williams Sonoma, West Elm, Waterford, Dollar Store, Versace, CB2, Lenox, Target) - Retail experience required - Familiarity with books (new and used) is a plus - Previous experience in a thrift store, warehouse, or nonprofit setting is a plus - Creativity and enthusiasm for our mission Required Skills - Organized, self-motivated, and personable - Strong professional communication skills - Ability to work independently and as part of a team - Comfortable working with diverse individuals and personalities - Strong pricing judgment and attention to detail - Ability to identify antiques, vintage items, and high-value brands - Ability to lift up to 50 lbs independently and assist with team lifting for larger items Additional Information - Wednesdays are a consistent, ongoing shift - Training shifts required on Tuesdays and Thursdays (April–June) - Additional seasonal/temporary hours available June through August - Future scheduling beyond summer will be determined based on staffing needs - Hiring ASAP Who This Role Is Best Suited For - Enjoys thrifting, pricing items, and working with a wide variety of goods - Likes staying active and busy throughout their shift - Is comfortable making independent decisions on pricing and value This role may be challenging for someone who: - Prefers a sedentary or low-volume retail environment - Is not comfortable with physical labor or lifting heavy items No calls or walk-ins, please!
