I have a vintage SEARS Inductive Timing Light Model 161.2137 for sale, still in very good condition for its age. I myself last used it in the mid 1990s on my old straight six, 76 Chevy Nova (RIP) but I have just recently tested and verified the light is still working by having a neighbor let me use it on his 78 Impala. Comes with instruction manual. Sorry, but I no longer have the original box. The SEARS Inductive Timing Light Model 161.2137 was made available during the mid-to-late 1970s and sold through the 1980s. Sears marketed this heavy-duty, Made in the USA tool through its automotive catalog sections as electronic clip-on inductive ignition systems testers became the standard for DIY car maintenance. It is a popular vintage automotive tool originally manufactured for Craftsman by Actron. It is designed to strobe-flash exactly when cylinder number 1 fires, allowing you to visually adjust your distributor and set the engines base ignition timing. Basic Hookup Guide: • Prepare the Engine: With the engine off, insure the vehicle is in park/neutral with the parking brake set. • Locate and make sure the timing marks are clearly visible. • Connect to Power: Attach the timing lights power clips directly to the 12V car battery; Red clip goes to the Positive (+) terminal and Black clip goes to the Negative (-) terminal. • Attach the Inductive Pickup: Clamp the large inductive pickup directly around the spark plug wire for the Number 1 cylinder as close to the distributor cap as possible but far enough away from the other spark plug wires to avoid false readings. Ensure the clamp snaps completely shut and the arrow on the clamp points toward the spark plug (away from the distributor). • Disconnect and plug the vacuum advance line going to the distributor. If not, this will also give a false reading because the engine is slightly advancing the timing at idle. How to Use It: • Start the engine and let it idle. • Pull and hold the trigger on the timing light, aiming the flash directly at the engines timing marks located earlier. • The light will strobe on every firing of the number 1 cylinder. This will make the moving timing mark appear to stand perfectly still at a specific degree measurement on the scale. • To adjust the timing, slightly loosen the distributor hold-down clamp and rotate the distributor housing very slowly until the timing marks align with the manufacturers specified degree setting. Troubleshooting & Maintenance: Because these timing lights are vintage, they are susceptible to a few common issues: • No Light/Intermittent Flashing: The small magnets located inside the inductive clamp can sometimes become dislodged or fractured over time, preventing the signal from being picked up. Make sure they are clean and correctly seated inside the clamp. • Damaged Leads/Cable: Check the battery clips and the primary trigger wire for internal breaks or fraying. • Obsolete Parts: The xenon flash tube (bulb) used inside these models is generally obsolete. If the bulb burns out or cracks and loses its xenon gas, replacement bulbs are typically no longer in production. You will need to procure a universal replacement, find a donor tool to use for parts or replace the tool entirely. PLEASE NOTE: This standard inductive timing light will only work on older vehicles with a points/condenser/distributor/HEI style ignition system. It WILL NOT work on most modern vehicles using Coil-on-Plug (COP) ignition systems due to the fact that most of these systems lack accessible spark plug wires. However, you can make it work by using a specialized COP adapter loop or by installing a temporary spark plug wire extension between the coil pack and the spark plug. Asking $15 firm, CASH ONLY.
