Antique Greek Steam Trunk

This is an antique Greek steam trunk ( 37” wide x 27” high x 27 1/2” deep) made of solid wood with tin metal reinforcement on corners and wood bumper slats on top, front and sides. Over 50 hours were spent reclaiming the exterior of this vintage trunk, as it was in extremely poor condition when purchased from an antique shop in Tarpon Springs, Florida. Tarpon Springs has a large Geek community and it most likely accompanied the emigree and/or their family to America. The exterior is time worn and shows the dents and travel marks of being stored in the hold of a ship with countless other steamer trunks, as well as rail travel, and most likely the final leg of the journey via horse and buggy. The purchaser can leave the interior as is, or remove the original time worn Greek lining paper and add their own personal touch. Also, if the outside colors are not to one’s liking, they can be modified. It’s known to be an original Greek trunk because the maker affixed his business label on the inside lid. It hails from the third largest city in Greece - Patrais - as it was called when made with the modern name now being Patras. It was made by Nikol. & Georg. Ch. Katri, at 85 Riga Ferraiou Street. While the shop is long gone this street is now a pedestrian walkway with shops lined along it. Considering the original purchase price along with the time and materials spent to refurbish this classic piece, the price is $350. This trunk has withstood the test of time and with care will be passed down to future generations.
