saleSept. 3, 1909 Original Newspaper: Cook’s Discovery of the North Pole
Steven Rodriguez
Sept. 3, 1909 Original Newspaper: Cook’s Discovery of the North Pole

On September 7, 1909, the New York Times headline was “Peary Discovers the North Pole.” There was a problem, though. He didn’t. The week before, the New York Herald reported that Dr. Frederick A. Cook claimed to have reached the North Pole . Peary’s claim won out—but only temporarily. In 1988, the National Geography Society found that Peary’s claim was false and probably fell short of his “discovery.” Also, Dr. Cook’s description of the Arctic region was verified by later explorers. Dr. Cook is now regarded as the “Discoverer of the North Pole.” The newspaper The Weekly Ocean and Farm officially began in 1872 , directly after the Chicago Fire. In 1909, it was located on 57 W. Monroe St. in Chicago. It stopped publishing in 1914. This complete 12 page newspaper is in really nice shape for its age. There’s some creasing and slight separation on the front horizontal original fold (under Cook’s illustration), but it has no effect on the graphics. The front page illustration shows Cook, American flag in hand, standing next to an eagle perched on a rock at the North Pole. Pages 2 and 3 are devoted to stories about Cook’s expedition, his biography, and many pen and ink illustrations of his journey. What’s so interesting on page 3 is a section called “Records of the Most Famous Attempts to Reach the Pole’ in both Eastern and Western Hemispheres. Under the Western Hemisphere section, last on the list, is “Robert E. Peary.” So much for Peary’s claim. Pages 4 and 5 have various bits of news and a Winchester ad. Pages 6 and 7 have articles on religion, “Home Health,” and farm and garden tips. There’s also a great ad announcing the “opening” of 80,000 acres of land in Snake River, Idaho, buy the U. S. Government (probably to encourage homesteading and agricultural production). Page 8 has an entire short story titled “The Prince of Darkness” while page 9 has agricultural trade news. Page 10 has a section called “Lost and Found Poems and Songs” and an article on Iowa State Fair awards. Page 11 has articles on household hints. The back page has trade news for cattle and hogs, along with a huge ad for the Astro-Chromoi-Scope, a device to help foretell the future. To help preserve it, I’ve placed the paper on a cardboard backing and UV-protected cover.

Old Planter’s Peanut burlap sack advertising “Mr. Peanut” Great Shape

In 1906, Italian immigrant Amedeo Obici started the Planters Peanut Company in Wilkes-Barre, PA, and later moved the company to Suffolk, VA, in 1913. Obici had the ingenious idea of using peanuts, which had previously been used as animal feed in the 1899s, and converting them to a human snack food through roasting and salting. In 1916, a schoolboy won a contest to draw a company logo, which was called “Mr. Peanut.” Mr. Peanut’s monocle, top hat, and cane were added in the 1930s. This burlap advertising sack is probably from the 1940s, possibly early 1950s. It held 1 1/2 pounds of roasted, salted peanuts in the shell. The burlap sack has the classic Mr. Peanut logo and measures 8 x 15 inches. As you can see from the photos, the advertising sack is in great shape and would be perfect for framing.

Antique Magazines for Housewives

This monthly magazine, in newsprint form, offered housewives back in the day romantic short stories, articles on managing the home, songs, poems, and dress patterns—along with some interesting ads. The magazine, published by Vickey and Hill Publishing Co. of Augusta, Maine, called itself “A Journal of Choice Literature.” It measures 13 1/2 x 11 inches. Although some of the bindings have come loose, all of the magazines have the full amount of pages. One of the magazines have torn corners on the last few pages and some have a few nicks on the borders, but all of the great graphics are in good shape. Here are the dates. —July 1923 —April 1927 (loose binding0 Special Easter Edition —June 1927 (loose binding) “Children’s Day” —Feb. 1930 (good shape) —Jan. 1933 (good shape; 32 pages) New Year’s Edition Two things stand out with these magazines the cover art (most signed by F. S. Nosworthy) and the ads (some are comical). All five magazines were addressed were addressed to a person in Watervliet, MI, and are in pretty good shape for being around a hundred years old.

saleFour Rare 1920s Women’s Gymnastics Photo prints Stanford Univ.
Karen Torres
Four Rare 1920s Women’s Gymnastics Photo prints Stanford Univ.

American Heritage Magazine began in 1947 as a specialized history journal and two years later, expanded to publishing for general audiences on many historical aspects of American life through the ages. In 2007, the magazine went completely digital. American Heritage would find rare photos in many U.S. libraries, purchase the rights to make prints, and use the photos in one of its articles. These four photos became part of the American Heritage archives. I’m not sure if these four photos were ever used. The first one shows the stages to complete a standing somersault. Photo 2 shows “the butt raise,” a highly complex maneuver. I’m not sure what to call Photo 3, bu the fourth one looks like a VICTORY formation. On the back of each photo is a notation by a staff member. These four are part of a series of five, but I only have four. The photos are sub 8 x 10 inches and are in great shape Pleaser excuse the crude watermarks, but I’ve had too many folds “borrow” my images.

Enamelware Chamber Pot

Vintage Chamber Pot, probably U.S. Standard from the 1920 s, although it is not marked. It measures 10 x 10-1/2 and has 2 rings for a handle, but the handle is g 1, as is the lid which I presumed it had. It has lots of chips in the enamel, but it is still very sturdy and heavy. It has some rust where the chips in the enamel are. A nice piece of yesteryear! $5 Call 720-244-5817

sale132 year old Advertising Calendar: Dated 1894
Margaret Lee
132 year old Advertising Calendar: Dated 1894

This original die-cut lithographed advertising calendar from the 19th century measures 8 1/2 inches tall by 6 inches wide. On the front bottom left is a copyright date (1893) by the Knapple Lithograph Co. (as shown). On the back is the entire calendar for 1894. When you open the calendar, there’s some oxidation/discoloring on the borders that matches the design and cut of the front of the calendar. Luckily, it has no effect on the graphics. On the left side of the inside portion of the calendar is a list of insurance rates. For instance, 50 cents a week for a person aged 21 would insure them for $930, big bucks 125 years ago. Also, the major dates for the holidays are listed. Back then, Memorial Day was called Decoration Day. In 1894, the Metropolitan Insurance Company’s offices were in Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Bay City/Saginaw. I think it’s safe to say that only a few copies—if any— of this calendar probably exist, especially in such great condition. As you can see from the photos, the colors and graphics are bold and clear,

Early 1900s Oval Framed Photo “Cupid Awake”

During the Victorian era, people loved artwork that featured angelic children. In 1897, artist Morris B.Parkinson hired a photographer who used his friend’s four-year old daughter to pose for two photos, which he called “Cupid Asleep” and “Cupid Awake.” The photos became so popular that Ohio Art Company, in 1908, marketed the prints to sell in hundreds of five and dime stores in the U. S. In various sizes. They were fitted in oval frames. This is one of those prints in a glass covered frame. The oval frame measures approximately 8 x10 inches and is in excellent shape.

saleClifton Springs Sanitarium (NY) cancelled envelope. April 18, 1903
Jason Nelson
Clifton Springs Sanitarium (NY) cancelled envelope. April 18, 1903

In 1850, Dr. Henry Foster believed he had a calling from God to help cure sick and weary patients through natural sulphur water therapy and other holistic methods that were ahead of their time. As a result, Foster created the Clifton Springs Sanitarium Company north of the Finger Lakes region in New York. Business became so popular that Foster demolished the original building in 1882 and built a massive five-story structure. Foster believed—as did many others of his time—that water therapy worked, especially water with sulphur. Native Americans had been using it there for hundreds of years, and the pioneers knew of it in the early 1800s. The sanatarium eventually became the Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic, never losing sight of its consideration of alternative cures. This envelope is postmarked “April 18, 1903” and has a beautiful picture of the newest building at the time. It’s addressed to “Mrs. O. V. Greenfield of Hastings, Mich, and was sent from Livonia, NY. On the back is another post mark verifying that the letter was received two days later on April 20—pretty impressive for so long ago. The back of the envelope instructs post offices to return the letter if not delivered in x amount of days. And at the bottom is an interesting note, stating that undelivered letters mailed in hotel envelopes will be sent to the Dead Letter Office, unless a return address is provided. This envelope is in pretty good shape for being over 120 years old. Since Im in Michigan, I will be happy to ship it free.
