A literary treasure from 125 years ago. As such, while the inside has yellowed pages, its cover has seen some wear and stain. That could be part of its authenticity and charm. William the Conqueror[] was the first Norman king of England reigning from 1066 until his death. He was Duke of Normandy from 1035 onward. By 1060, following a long struggle, his hold on Normandy was secure. In 1066, following the death of the English king, Edward the Confessor, William invaded England, leading a Franco-Norman army to victory over the Anglo-Saxon forces of Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings. A loving note inside the front cover : “ From Aunt Maud to Willie / Christmas 1901 “, printed in an absolutely perfect style of the turn of the 19th century into the 20 th ! Very endearing. 251 pages. “Willie” was evidently a William Burton whose ownership stamp appear inside the front and back covers. One might wonder if Aunt Maud bought this for her nephew because he shared a first name with the subject person of the book’s title ? From a short reading of its Table of Contents and its List of Engravings, it a appears to be a through representation of the events of William’s era and is enhanced by a series of historicall engravings. The book is TENDER and should be HANDLED WITH CARE as it has been read and re-read over so many ages. You will enjoy FEELING THE STORY not just reading about it. 256 pages.
