AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE IS A RARE OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL VINTAGE LATE 1920S OR 1930S ALEXANDER CALDER ERA MODERN LINEAR WIRE SCULPTURE REPRESENTING A BULLFIGHTER WHO IS DRAPING HIS CAPE OVER A CHARGING BULL! Both the bull and the bullfighter are made from several hand-worked steel wires and the majority of the wire sculpture was originally painted various colors. To this end, the bull has most of its original black paint while the bullfighter was left as the natural steel wire color. In addition, the bull’s horns appear to have been painted a steel grey color. Also, the wire that represents the bullfighter’s cape was once painted red but there are only traces remaining. And the two spears plunged into the bull’s backside are made from combined brass and steel wires with the steel wires having been painted black. Stylistically and technically, there are numerous attributes about this original vintage late 1920s or 1930s wire sculpture that tie directly to the work of American artist Alexander Calder. Even the curatorial staff at the Calder Foundation admitted to this fact but would not take the extra step of absolute confirmation. To this end, they confirmed this wire sculpture to be of the correct period (late 1920s or 1930s) and they confirmed that Alexander Calder used paints on his wire sculptures. They even confirmed the various types of wires are correct. But apparently the knotting is different and consequently could not provide their stamp of approval. Regardless, this sculpture was constructed during the late 1920s or 1930s and was unquestionably by an artist who knew what he/she was doing! The overall height of this sculpture is approximately eight and three quarter inches (8 3/4”) and the length is about eleven inches (11”). Condition: For starters, this wire sculpture was acquired from the estate of watercolor artist Janet Wheeler in Carmel, California. To this end, the sculpture has not been messed with in any way since it came into my possession (about twenty years ago). And because it has not been cleaned, there is a thick layer of dust in all of the recessed areas and a little bit of age related grime here and there. Again, the wire that represents the bullfighter’s cape was once painted red but there are only traces remaining. And there is minor paint loss in other areas. Overall, however, this rare exceptional late 1920s or 1930s wire sculpture looks to be in remarkable condition.
