They are sturdy, turn-of-the-century oak—the kind of honest American furniture that sat through thirty years of Sunday roasts, withstands the sudden arrival of large dogs, and remains quietly indifferent to changing fashions. Built between 1890 and 1910, they feature steam-bent crests with pressed floral scrollwork, turned spindles, and woven cane seats that have outlasted most of the people who originally sat in them. Up for sale is a charming set of four late 1800s to early 1900s pressback oak dining chairs. Characterized by their pressed-wood crest rails featuring detailed floral scrollwork, turned spindles, and classic cane/rush woven seats, these pieces represent the height of turn-of-the-century American manufacturing. During the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, advancements in steam-bending and mechanical press-molding allowed makers to produce intricate, carved-look detailing that brought traditional craftsmanship into everyday American homes. Condition & Maintenance Notes: The chairs are in fair to good antique condition overall, structurally sound and sturdy, with the woven cane seats in great shape for their age. Full transparency: one of the back spindles is broken. Replacing it is possible, but it would take quite a bit of doing—it’s probably best to just call it well-earned patina, attesting to a life well lived. Or, who knows? It may have been broken by Grandfather demonstrating proper cavalry techniques. See bonus story at the end. 😀 I also see one spot that seems to be a crack in the back, see pic. But it doesnt seem to be loose or splitting. Aside from that single spindle and the minor crack, they are remarkably complete and in good condition. The original finish displays a rich, natural oak patina that does not need stripping or restaining at all. They just need a simple clean and nourishment—a quick wash with Murphy’s Oil Soap, followed by an application of boiled linseed oil or similar, and a coat of wood-replenishing paste wax, will bring out the natural wood grain and restore their luster. For now, Im a bit busy, so I have priced them accordingly to pass along the savings and clear some space, giving you a chance to pick up a solid antique set for a low entry price, put in a little sweat equity to refresh them as you like, and enjoy the honest satisfaction of an afternoons work well done. Grandfather did not fall. The chair simply leaned two inches to the left, like an old ironclad taking on a modest amount of bilge water. Grandfather paused, mid-charge, glared at the floorboards as though they had committed treason, and declared that furniture had simply been better made in 1874. The spindle was never replaced. To replace it would have been an admission that Grandfather had been defeated by an armchairs-worth of steam-bent wood.
