The price is $800. This price is firm and non-negotiable. Please dont ask for a discount or make an offer. For sale is a sitting bench intended for one person. You could also potentially call this a stool or chair. Of course, you can use it for other purposes other than sitting. I purchased this bench a few decades ago from a San Francisco furniture gallery. At the time of purchase, I was told that this item was originally manufactured and sold by the Danish company, Soborg Mobler. Unfortunately, it does not actually have a logo, label, brand marker, or model number on it as confirmation. But I doubt is would be produced by anyone else other than Soborg Mobler. This is based on the materials used (rosewood and cane) and the extremely sophisticated woodworking techniques employed in its construction. It was likely produced in the mid-1950s. Its from the Mid-Century-Modern (MCM) genre of furniture which was popular in the 1950s. The bench measures about 32 wide, 20 deep, and 15.75 tall. The seating surface is slightly less expansive, measuring about 24.5 wide and 14 deep. The seating surface rests about 14.25 off of the ground. The bench weighs about 8 pounds. The bench is entirely constructed of two materials: 1) rosewood and 2) rattan / cane. The frame of the bench is made up of ten beams of solid Brazilian rosewood. These beams are solid through and through. This is not rosewood veneer over particle board or plywood. All ten rosewood beams physically connect together to form the frame of the bench only using wood-on-wood assembly techniques. There are no metal screws or brackets involved. There are two (2) primary rosewood beams on the top of the bench, located on the front and back sides. Each of these beams is 32 long and 3 x 1 thick. There is a gentle rounding on each long corner of each beam. Underneath these primary beams are two (2) secondary rosewood support beams, also located on the front and back sides. Each of these beams is 23 long and 1 x 1 thick. There are two (2) additional primary rosewood beams on the top of the bench, located on the right and left sides. Each of these beam is 16 long and 3.5 x 1 thick. Finally, there are four (4) rosewood beams which serve as legs, one at each corner. Each of these beams is 14.75 long (or tall) and 1 x 1.25 thick. The flat seating surface (where your butt goes) is entirely composed of rattan cane. The cane is the outer bark or husk of the rattan palm tree. This is a very durable, but flexible natural material that works well to create a soft-sided seating base. Some of the cane is woven or threaded through holes in the front and back rosewood beams. Some of the cane is woven or threaded through holes in the left and right side rosewood beams. The weaving process creates a very sturdy, but slightly flexible flat surface for sitting. My guess is that there is many hundreds of feet of cane involved to create the seating surface. Picture 21 to 24 show closeups of the cane threading or weaving technique and pattern. When first sold, these types of benches often came with a removable, soft padded, fabric cushion that was placed on top of the rattan surface. I dont have the original cushion. You can place almost any appropriately-sized cushion on top. Or you could leave it naked to show off the rattan seating area. The bench is in excellent structural and functional condition. There is nothing structurally or functionally wrong with it. All ten rosewood beams are in excellent shape, with no bending, warping, breaking, or deterioration. The wood-on-wood connections are still robust and sturdy. The threaded rattan cane strings are also in excellent shape, with no deterioration. There are four places where extremely small sections of the rattan seems to have broken off. I believe 99% of the cane is intact. Given this, the cane seating area is still structurally robust. The bench is also in excellent cosmetic condition. There are a few tiny scratches from normal wear on some rosewood surfaces. But these cosmetic issues dont harm the structural integrity of the bench, which is solid. You can pick up from my house near the San Jose Airport. Given its small size, this could easily to placed inside a standard vehicle. Or I would be happy to deliver it to you, if I happen to travel out in your direction. I prefer that you reach out via text message. Sending an initial email message is OK. But arranging pickup solely using email is not a feasible option for me.
