This gorgeous handcrafted Chinese Coromandel double-sided folding room divider screen features beautiful designs on both sides, is vintage mid 20th-century, was purchased brand new from a renowned manufacturer in Hong Kong 50 years ago, and we are the original owners! The following is some special information about how this wonderful screen was made: Known as Coromandel lacquer, this traditional Chinese method involves applying multiple heavy layers of dark lacquer over wood. The artisan then deeply incises or carves away portions of the lacquer to create intricate designs. The exposed, carved-away areas are filled with vibrant natural pigments and often highlighted by an underlying gold leaf finish, as seen extensively across the water and sky sections of this piece. This beautiful screen showcases a traditional landscape motif carved over a gilded background on the front side. The detailed panels illustrate a classic, sprawling Chinoiserie landscape featuring rolling mountains, stylized pine trees, traditional pagodas, and distant boats sailing across a stylized body of water. The reverse side artwork depicts exotic long-tailed birds (likely pheasants or birds of paradise) perched among gnarled pine tree branches, bamboo shoots, and blooming peonies rising from a stylized rock formation. In Chinese art, this combination traditionally symbolizes longevity, prosperity, and high status. Each of the six solid, heavyweight wooden panels are 16 inches wide and 72 inches (six feet) tall. They are interconnected by original brass hardware and stand on brass protective caps (shoes). There are an unlimited possibility of angles to display and showcase this beautiful piece. At its maximum open width, the piece is eight feet wide. It folds flat for easy storage or transport. This high quality piece is in excellent structural condition! Minimal cosmetic wear is commensurate with its age. Having a secondary design on the reverse side means you have a reversible, double-sided screen, which increases both its functionality and appeal! This style allows you to flip this unique screen depending on the rooms mood or season, offering a quiet, elegant black and neutral display to contrast the vibrant gold front. We enjoyed this treasured item for many years in our home, yet downsizing and life changes necessitate that we must part with it at this time.
