In 1883, Stickley established a furniture company called Stickley Brothers with two of his brothers, Albert and Charles. Gustav’s other siblings, Leopold and John George, would later form L & J.G. Stickley Inc. in Fayetteville, New York, in 1905. As a furniture designer and publisher of the magazine The Craftsman, Gustav adopted many of the ideals of the British design reform movement and popularized both its philosophy and its aesthetics in the United States. Born in Wisconsin, Stickley moved with his family to Pennsylvania when he was a teenager and began working in his uncle’s chair factory in the town of Brandt. There, he learned the techniques of late-19th-century furniture making at a time when the vogue was for Victorian revival furniture, which was characterized by extensive ornamentation. When Stickley Brothers foundered, Gustav partnered five years later with salesman Elgin Simonds to form a new firm, Stickley & Simonds, which produced traditional furniture that appealed to the burgeoning American middle class. The success of this venture enabled Stickley to travel to Europe, where he discovered the writings of John Ruskin and William Morris, the two preeminent thinkers of the British Arts and Crafts movement. Stickley also traveled to France, where the Art Nouveau movement impressed him with its imaginative designs and skilled craftsmanship. Stickley parted ways with Simonds at the turn of the 20th century and decided to focus his creative energies on producing furniture in what became known as the Craftsman style, incorporating some of the elements of the designs and movements he had encountered in Europe. The pieces Stickley created, which he stamped with the logo of a joiner’s compass, were rectilinear, largely free of ornament, made of oak, and built in such a way that the nature of their construction was plainly visible — all reflections of the tenets of the Arts and Crafts movement. While some people referred to Stickley’s furniture as Mission furniture — a term that references the furnishings of the Spanish missions in California — Gustav commonly called his work “Craftsman” owing to the inspiration he found in the British Arts and Crafts movement. Stickley benches and rocking chairs were popular, and his leather-upholstered armchairs combine practicality, comfort and an understated silhouette. In 1901, Stickley launched The Craftsman magazine, which contained articles on all manner of domestic topics, from gardening and cooking to art and design, as well as poetry and fiction. In addition to popularizing Stickely’s own designs, the magazine acquainted Americans with the Arts and Crafts style in all its forms through its graphic design and the bungalows, art pottery, and hammered-copper lamps pictured in its pages. When Gustav Stickley died, in 1942, Arts and Crafts had been replaced by modernism as the favored aesthetic. The work of L & J.G. Stickley flourished even as the Arts and Crafts style fell out of fashion because Leopold and John George adapted to the changing times.

We had this for a while, but it no longer fits out needs. Dimensions are 42 x 29 1/2 outside, and 35 1/2 x 23 1/2 on the inside frame. The molding is 2 1/4 thick. Its very well made - gilded hardwood frame. Used obviously, but in good condition with some normal wear. The back is stringed to be hung either vertically or horizontally. Mirror 24x36 is beveled. For sale is a tall table that is generally used in an entryway, hallway, living room, dining room, or bedroom. Such tables are usually called an entryway table, console table, hallway table, or sofa table. But it can also be used in other settings and for other purposes. This table was made by the Bombay Company, which was founded in 1978 as a mail-order business specializing in antique-inspired home furnishings. They became very popular in the 1990s, when they opened up retails shops in large malls across the U.S. They went bankrupt in the mid-2000s. This console table is Bombay Company model number 16HKP. It was manufactured in 1999. As with most Bombay Company furniture, this table is a traditional, dark-stained wood piece that evoked the British Empire. In particular, this table is a Queen Anne style piece that is characterized by graceful features and minimalist ornamentation. The table is nearly entirely constructed of solid plantation wood. This is wood throughout and not just wood veneer over a particle board base. There are a few metal support brackets throughout. The table weighs about 20 pounds. The overall size of the table is 36 wide, 14 deep, and 32 tall. It is constructed of a single solid wood panel at the top connected to four sets of solid wood support panels underneath. These five panels create a rectangular table top box that measures 36 wide, 14 deep, and 8 tall. The table top surface measures 36 wide and 14 deep. The table top surface rests 32 off of the ground. Underneath this table top box are four (4) legs that physically connect using screw-mount brackets. Each leg measures 24 long (or tall). Each legs is made up of a solid beam of plantation wood that is about 1 in diameter. There is some small ornamentation in the round legs. Its possible to remove each of the four legs to minimize space needed for transportation and storage. The table is in excellent structural and functional condition. All of the wood panels and beams are robust with no bending, warping, fatigue, or deterioration. The four legs screw into the top panel with ease, but lock with incredible sturdiness. Overall, the table is extremely sturdy and robust. Cosmetically, everything is also in excellent condition. There are some extremely tiny scratches on some wood surfaces from normal wear, but most of these are very hard to notice. Also, four screw holes were drilled into the back panel to place some earthquake straps, and these are potentially noticeable. These cosmetic issues dont harm the structural integrity of the table. You can pick up the table from my house near the San Jose Airport. You can likely fit this into a standard sized passenger car. I can help you load it into your car. Or I would be happy to deliver it to you, if I happen to travel out in your direction. I prefer that you reach out via text message. Sending an initial email message is OK.
