Project Fixer 40s Vintage Antique Cedar Trunk Chest Linen Coffee Table Farmhouse Cottage Cabin Grand Millennial Up for sale is a vintage 1940s trunk that is built with solid construction and has that timeless classic profile. This piece was likely made by one of the prominent chest manufacturers of the era, crafted with heavy wood panels designed for durability. It is missing the back hinges, which will need to be replaced, but it does include the internal metal support brackets to keep the lid from opening too far back. Condition wise, this piece is being sold in solid but project as-is condition. It is quite solid and sturdy overall, but it is definitely a fixer project and is priced accordingly. The finish is pretty rough, though if someone loves a true, heavily distressed shabby chic antique condition, it could technically be used as is—perhaps with a flat clear coat applied over the remaining finish to seal in the character. That said, it really is a prime candidate to be fully refinished. The exterior can be scraped, sanded, and restained, painted, or styled however the potential buyer can imagine. It is built from what is probably some type of cedar, as was typical for these chests to provide good moth prevention storage for linens and blankets. While the interior is intact, it should have a good sanding inside to bring out the natural oils and aroma to really get that cedar trunk special smell going again. This versatile piece offers plenty of functional potential throughout the home. It works great as a statement coffee table, a hall trunk, a storage piece at the foot of the bed, or even a side or end table. With a little simple reinforcement, it could easily serve as an entryway bench with built-in storage. The chest measures 42 inches wide by 18.5 inches deep and stands 23 inches tall. For refinishing, there are plenty of directions you can take. You could strip the old finish completely and apply a rich stain with a clear coat to highlight the natural wood grain. Alternatively, painting it with chalk paint or a sleek acrylic enamel in modern charcoal, black, or sage green can instantly transform it into a contemporary focal point.
