This unique piece of furniture, known as a phone table or gossip bench, was specifically designed to accommodate heavy, non-portable corded landline telephones during the mid-20th century. It combines a single seat with an attached side table. The tabletop was meant to hold the phone, while the lower shelf or cubby below it typically stored thick phone directories, note pads, or writing utensils. These benches were a staple in household hallways and living rooms from the 1930s through the 1950s. They phased out of production as telephones became lightweight, portable, and eventually digital. This one is in excellent original condition, with the exception that the seat has been re-covered with a period-correct fabric. It is constructed of solid mahogany, and is sturdy for sitting. It would be an amazing display piece for any home or business. Measurements: 28” wide, 28” tall to the top of the flat tabletop surface, 33 ½” tall to the top of the backrest, 20” deep front to back.
