Songket or sungkit is a tenun fabric that belongs to the brocade family of textiles of Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia. It is hand-woven in silk or cotton, and intricately patterned with gold or silver threads. It is typically made by two weavers on handloom shuttles who create using traditional designs, motifs, and colors. Once reserved for use by royalty, it is now a staple of fine evening wardrobes for both men and woman on special occasions. The third image shows information about Songket which I obtained from the shop where it was bought in Kuala Lumpur in November, 2004. The frame itself is a work of intricate art and measures 20” on each side; the songket is a bit rectangular at 12 ½” x 14” and is held tightly in a custom matting. The first image exhibits what photographers call artifacts which in their trade means visual abnormalities which are NOT defects in the item being photographed but are often reflections, refractions, or odd behaviors of the lighting in the environment where photographed. The right half of the piece appears to be faded. IT IS NOT. The lighter shade of blue is simply side lighting coming into the house from a nearby window; the blue color is constant all the way across the fabric.
