Back in 1928, the vacuum cleaner hadn’t been around long. That year, General Electric had two models: a Union Model ($24.50) and a Standard Model ($35)—a lot of money back then. The Standard Model had instructions on a light cardboard sign, that attached to the vacuum handle. GE created a character called “Mr.-How-to-Do-It”. On the front of the cardboard sign, the character points out to “Look Inside” (actually on the back side). On the back are various use instructions for customers: adjusting the height for different rugs; vacuuming on a bare floor; attachments; and how to empty the bag. The sign is meant to hang from the new vacuum handle and is quite large, 12 inches long by 5 1/2 inches at its wides point. On the front, in the lower right, there’s a very small chunk in the man’s pant cuff. Luckily, it has no effect on the great graphics. The back has some slight staining, but with no effect on the text. At the bottom left is the date: “July, 1928.” Because this sign was from 98 years ago, I doubt if many of these exist, because they were so expendable. I’m also pretty sure that if any others exist, they aren’t in as good shape as this one.

The original Southern Hotel opened in St. Louis in 1865 and burned in 1872, killing at least 120 hotel guests and employees, It was rebuilt in 1877, much more fireproof this time. Eight years after the World’s Fair in St. Louis, in 1904, the hotel closed because of new competition. These two cancelled envelopes were postmarked June 4 and 11th, 1903 and probably held the hotel reservations for the upcoming World’s Fair. Both are addressed to a Mrs. O.V. Greenfield of Hastings, MI,. On the front upper left corner is the hotel’s logo (Coat of Arms?). One of the envelopes has a “World’s Fair St. Louis” postmark over the stamp. On the backs are postmarks from the Hastings, MI, post office. As you can see from the photos, the envelopes are in very good shape and an important part of the 1904 World’s Fair and St. Louis history. Since I live in Michigan, where these two pieces were sent, I would be happy to send them free, back to their home.

Lion Coffee began in 1864. In 1882, it became part of the Woolson Spice Co. of Toledo, Ohio. Alvin Woolson made Lion Coffee the second largest coffee producer in the world through great marketing. The company included trade and holiday cards with each purchase. This booklet measures 5 by 3 1/4 inches. It has 16 pages with 135 etiquette rules from the world of the late 1800s. Some of the “instructions” were a bit funny by today’s standards such as “Avoid slang phrases” and “Never address a person by name in a public place.” The front cover has a slight nick on the right border, but it has no effect on the great graphics. The back bottom border also has a nick, but does not affect any of the graphics either. I’ve seen plenty of trade cards and other Lion Coffee antique items over the years, but I’ve never seen anything like this. I doubt if a few—if any others—still exist. This promotional booklet is a great glimpse into society over 130 years ago. Because I live in Michigan, I will be happy to ship or we can meet at the Cabela’s exit off US 23..

Mid century Magnavox Astro Sonic Record Player. CONDTION: 1. Internal Speakers produce excellent sound while External Speakers produce no sound whatsoever (this may be a simple connection issue given that not even distorted sound comes out, but the problem is unknown). 2. In 1885, Joseph Michl began making cigars in Decatur, Illinois,. The company lasted until the very early 1900s. Michl called his cigar “The Best of Earth for 5 Cents.” This advertising card/sign has an illustration of 50 orphans, with the lone African-American child in the back row in the upper right corner. Also, note that some of the orphans aren’t very happy. At the top of the card is a perfectly punched hole designed to hold a string to hang as an advertising display in general stores. The card is made of light cardboard stock and measures 4 x 7n inches. As you can see from the photos, the card/sign is in great shape.

This original die-cut lithographed advertising calendar from the 19th century measures 8 1/2 inches tall by 6 inches wide. On the front bottom left is a copyright date (1893) by the Knapple Lithograph Co. (as shown). On the back is the entire calendar for 1894. When you open the calendar, there’s some oxidation/discoloring on the borders that matches the design and cut of the front of the calendar. Luckily, it has no effect on the graphics. On the left side of the inside portion of the calendar is a list of insurance rates. For instance, 50 cents a week for a person aged 21 would insure them for $930, big bucks 125 years ago. Also, the major dates for the holidays are listed. Back then, Memorial Day was called Decoration Day. In 1894, the Metropolitan Insurance Company’s offices were in Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Bay City/Saginaw. I think it’s safe to say that only a few copies—if any— of this calendar probably exist, especially in such great condition. Australians love their Vegemite; the Brits lover their Marmite; Americans love their peanut butter. Back in the day, the Brits also had a meat-based spread called Bovril. In the 1870s, a Scottish butcher created a thick and salty meat paste. He originally called it “Johnston’s Fluid Beef”. I can see why it was renamed Bovril. In the late 1800s and very early 1900s, Bovril was considered a superfood. It kept a long time and had a lot of protein. During World War I, Bovril was known as the “war food.” Sometimes it was mixed with hot water to make a warm, protein-packed drink. This sign, I believe, is from the WW I era. It reads “Noel Feeling Thanks to Bovril.” “Noel” is the French way of saying “Merry Christmas.” Based on the message and the holly bordering the upper and lower part of the poster, this was an advertising poster to connect Bovril with improving the Christmas spirit. The poster is quite large, approximately 30 x 20 inches. The bottom edge is a bit rough, with a small chunk missing on the lower right part of the poster. Also, one of the middle seams has split slightly. Because the poster is so old, a previous owner affixed it to a piece of cardboard for more support to preserve it. Regardless, it’s a great advertising poster from the early 1900s.

“Good Stories” was a women’s magazine published in the early 1900s. It was designed to to provide fashion advice, lifestyle, weight management, and love—along with a short story or two. The magazine also has some great ads from nearly a century ago. Many of them were quack medicine remedies. Two of the three magazines are exactly the same, from November, 1931. They both have a cover called “Amateur Night,” showing a young mother with two kids on her lap. Inside, there’s also a short story called “Amateur Night.” Inside are many great ads including goiter remedy, the Lindy Flyer Kid’s Wagon, and various contests. Both copies have very minor tears on the borders, with no effect on the great graphics. The single copy has a cover entitled “A Young Man in a Hurry” with a short story inside by the same name. There are also short stories entitled “Sweet Nancy” and “Frost.” Along with the many great ads, there are a few fashion patterns listed. The magazine measures 11 x 13 inches and is made of newsprint. Each edition is 20 pages long.

The only reason this calendar survived like it did (basically new) is that it was kept in a box for 117 years box (box included) . It was probably meant as a gift, but it was never used. Against the backdrop of the calendar is a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier entitled “The Quiet Room,” a poem about the importance of peace and quiet in order to find God. The starburst design is really neat, with a gold sun sending out rays in all directions. The original red bow tops off the calendar. All 12 months and days are represented. The calendar measures 10 inches in diameter and is just like it was back in 1907.

In 1850, Dr. Henry Foster believed he had a calling from God to help cure sick and weary patients through natural sulphur water therapy and other holistic methods that were ahead of their time. As a result, Foster created the Clifton Springs Sanitarium Company north of the Finger Lakes region in New York. Business became so popular that Foster demolished the original building in 1882 and built a massive five-story structure. Foster believed—as did many others of his time—that water therapy worked, especially water with sulphur. Native Americans had been using it there for hundreds of years, and the pioneers knew of it in the early 1800s. The sanatarium eventually became the Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic, never losing sight of its consideration of alternative cures. This envelope is postmarked “April 18, 1903” and has a beautiful picture of the newest building at the time. It’s addressed to “Mrs. O. V. Greenfield of Hastings, Mich, and was sent from Livonia, NY. On the back is another post mark verifying that the letter was received two days later on April 20—pretty impressive for so long ago. The back of the envelope instructs post offices to return the letter if not delivered in x amount of days. And at the bottom is an interesting note, stating that undelivered letters mailed in hotel envelopes will be sent to the Dead Letter Office, unless a return address is provided. This envelope is in pretty good shape for being over 120 years old. Since Im in Michigan, Ill ship it free.

For sale is what I think is 2 different antique German military bed warmers from the 20s-40s. I could be totally wrong as I had not seen this cool style before. They are kind of bean shaped, made of galvanized metal and has threaded brass caps on them. Very cool decor pieces for that farmhouse, shabby chic, or industrial vibe. These are right at 1ft wide.
