X Math Academy is a K–12 academy in Great Falls. Our instructors hold advanced degrees in the subjects they teach, our classes cap at eight students, and we write our own curriculum. We are hiring the instructor who will teach our English and writing program. This is not homework help and it is not test prep. Our students already get the Virginia curriculum at school. They come to us for what school does not have time to give them: close reading of real texts, and writing that says something. You will teach small classes for grades 6–12 using our curriculum — the framework, the sequence and the core materials are built here, as they are in every department at this academy. Your work is to teach it, to shape it in the room, and to bring your own reading, your own examples and your own craft to it. Our method is a floor, not a ceiling. We ask that you know Virginias English Standards of Learning well. Not so you can teach them — so you know exactly where school stops. That is where our work begins. WHAT WE NEED - Masters degree or higher in English, Literature, Creative Writing, Education or a closely related field - Demonstrated success teaching writing to middle and high school students - Working familiarity with Virginias English SOL - Evidence that adolescents engage with your teaching: student work you have shaped, retention in your classes, references who have watched you teach teenagers - Willingness to teach within a house curriculum and a shared method, and the judgment to make it live in the room - Authorization to work in the US and willingness to complete a background check NICE TO HAVE - Your own writing: published, performed, or a portfolio you are proud of - Experience contributing to a curriculum team — refining sequence, writing units, improving materials term over term - Experience with writing competitions or college application essays DETAILS Part-time to start, roughly 4 instructional hours per week, with a defined path to Lead Instructor as the program grows. Weekday late afternoons and evenings plus Saturday mornings. In person in Great Falls — this is not a remote role. $55–$75 per instructional hour, plus paid curriculum development time. Start date 09/13/2026. TO APPLY Reply by email with: 1. Your resume 2. A letter of no more than one page: tell us about a teenager who did not want to write, and what you did about it 3. One sample lesson plan or unit you have taught to this age group Please apply by email only — no phone calls, no walk-ins. Shortlisted candidates teach a paid thirty-minute demonstration lesson to a small group of our students. X Math Academy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider all qualified applicants without regard to any characteristic protected by federal, state or local law.
