A gorgeous teak 4 drawer highboy chest by Aasbjerg & Ortoft. Johannes Aasbjerg Andersen (1921-2006) was born in Struer, Denmark. In 1941, he received his apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker. By the end of the decade, he and his brother Harry Ørtoft Andersen opened a carpentry workshop called Aasbjerg & Ørtoft. In 1961, with Johannes working as the designer, they founded a new furniture company called “Excellent Furniture Company” and opened their first store in Copenhagen, Denmark. Their creativity was obviously focused on furniture and not company naming. Their pieces were handmade and featured teak creations for all rooms of the house. Soon a second store was opened in Wiesbaden, West Germany. They had great success for years selling their beautifully done pieces with typically clean Danish lines. Their pieces were especially appreciated by American pilots stationed at the US Army base in Wiesbaden. Eventually, like many small Danish cabinetmaking workshops of that period, operations naturally wound down or dissolved quietly as the mid-century modern era shifted in the 1970s, leaving no specific public record of a final closing day. According to page 18 of the Excellent Furniture Company catalog, this 4 drawer chest is model EX/242. It states that the piece measures 29 ½” by 19 ¾ by 33 ¾ H, which is exactly what it measures in person. The chest sits on a beautifully done one piece frame with tapered legs. The back is a secondary back panel, providing a nice looking, stained wood back panel that will probably, rarely be seen. Interestingly enough, the company did not mark their furniture, only some of their dining and serving pieces; so, these pieces bear no maker’s marks. This piece is in very good vintage condition. The top surface has been very lightly sanded and the entire piece oiled to relieve it from decades of Colorado dryness. The reinvigorated teak glows with new life. Only upon very close inspection did we notice two old repairs on the piece. One is on the top right corner of the top-drawer face where a small (2 inch) piece has been re-glued. See image 7. The second is the same repair (3 inch) on the top left corner of the bottom drawer. See image 8. They are small enough and so well done that they are very difficult to notice in the grain of the teak. This chest, as well as our other Excellent Furniture Company pieces, are hard to find Danish creations with classic mid-century lines. They have been re-vitalized and are looking for their new home. We have two matching six drawer chests in the shop right now. They can be seen and purchased at the address in the listing. Delivery is available.

A mid-century end table from the rare Tuxedo line of Lane Furniture. The Lane Furniture Company was founded in Altavista, VA in 1912. For decades they were known for their cedar chests. By 1950 they saw Danish modern furniture imports begin to take hold in households. The Tuxedo line of Lane furniture is often called “the bow tie collection” for its striking use dark rosewood inlays in a bow tie shape. This line was designed by Ernest Swarts and O.B. Solie. The Tuxedo line was introduced in 1959 and produced for only a few years. This flat end table is model 0921-05. It features a runner bar on two sides that is attached to the top with two small bow tie shaped supports, continuing the tuxedo theme. There is a low shelf underneath. The legs taper gracefully. It measures 21 inches by 28 by 20 high. The serial number underneath tells us it was made on June 13, 1959, the first year of the Tuxedo line’s production. This table is in excellent vintage condition. It has been lightly refinished on top, but retains the original look of the walnut grain. There is a very small blemish on one corner of the underneath shelf. This is a solidly made, unusual Lane end table. It can be seen and purchased at the address in the listing. Delivery is available.
