It still works like it always has. And it isn’t too shabby looking either, for its age. The MB-D10 battery grip and Wimberley quick release are included in the price. New, it was over $3,000 after taxes. Which is about what the closest equivalents among Nikon’s current options will cost you. Rare overstock D700s (never pre-owned) and refurbished ones cost in the neighborhood of $1500. And new overstock of archived but more recent equivalents like the d610 will set you back around $1500. So at the offered price a person can’t go wrong—for a camera that is capable of producing results comparable to the latest and greatest DSLRs. At least as far as the naked eye is concerned. Key Specifications: - Sensor: 12.1-megapixel - FX-format (full-frame) - CMOSAutofocus: 51-point AF system (derived from the flagship Nikon D3) - ISO Range: 200 – 6,400 (expandable to 100 and 25,600) - Shooting Speed: 5 frames per second natively; up to 8 FPS with the optional MB-D10 battery grip - Build: Weather-sealed magnesium-alloy The shutter release count stands at 79,700. Putting it at just over 50% of its official factory rated shutter life of 150,00 actuations. Regarding shutter life, keep in mind that the number of releases a camera is rated for is not a strict expiration date, but more of a statistically average failure point. Like the milage a car’s timing belt is rated for. And when it comes to the D700 in particular, because it has the same heavy-duty shutter mechanism as professional flagship models like the Nikon D3, it regularly surpasses its rating. Often lasting well beyond 250,000 to 500,000 clicks before the shutter needs to be serviced. To put it in perspective, I used this camera on a regular basis between 2008-2018. Since then I haven’t used it nearly as much. Meaning that 79,700 clicks represents about ten years of regular use. So even without any expectation of surpassing the rated number of shutter releases it is safe to conclude there is a lot of life left in this camera. It seems worth mentioning about the D700 image sensor, that while 12 megapixels might seem low to some, the theory is that a lower pixel count explains its excellent high-ISO performance and low noise levels. And that is precisely why I chose the 12 megapixel D700 over the Canon equivalent. Controling noise was a priority for me because I had resolved to pursue landscape and wildlife photography using natural light only. And so was anticipating having to use higher ISOs more than just occasionally. Whatever accounts for it, the D700 does have a reputation for keeping noise to a minimum. And for my part I have to say I have been pleased with its performance in that and every other respect.
