WWII era Genuine Lane Company Cedar Chest - Style 2851 Made 8/12/1945

This is being sold for $229 or best offer. This is a fantastic condition 80 year old vintage cedar chest with hinged shelf and it is handcrafted from the Lane Company. Altavista, Virginia. Purchased in the 1945 it has been quietly doing its job, protecting family keepsakes for 80 years. Sadly, it is time to give this keepsake to a family that will enjoy it for decades to come and pretty soon you will have a genuine 100 + year old antique, and an antique made during some very historical times. The exterior wood is Maple and of course the inside box is that of Cedar. The Specific for authenticity, beside the original in box engraving (see images) and the paper Lane Company Literature inside the top lid are as follows: Style 2851 with a Serial No. 451280 and a code RB5. These codes are found on the underside of the cedar chest. The Serial Number actually tells you when the chest was made by reading the numbers backward. This chest was made 8/12/1945. This was a hope chest for my mom who was 9 years old at the time and it was a very traditional thing to buy for a young woman to be. There is a lot of history that was happening in and around the time this Cedar Chest was made. WWII was not over yet. On August 6th Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima by B-29 bomber Enola Gay, three days later... On August 9th Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki by B-29 bomber Bockscar.... three days later.... On August 12th - Lane Company built this Cedar Chest Style 2851 - Serial Number 451280 and shipped it off to Richmond California, where her Dad, My Grandfather, worked on the Kaiser Liberty Ships and three days later on ...... August 15th - Japan announces surrender .... and on (dang not three days later) September 2, 1945 - The formal signing ceremony with Pres. Truman on the Missouri anchored in Tokyo Bay. You can only imagine what was going through the heads of the craftsman at Lane Company in Virginia home to so many Navy Shipyards... certainly so many sighs of relief and Victory Parties to be sure Condition: If you are a purest and wanting a perfect condition 80 year old piece of furniture this is probably not for you. There are three items that need to be looked after to make it a top grade item (minus the few scratches and nicks that come with an 80 year old piece of furniture. 1) It does have a damaged left rear base (see image) that could use some shoring up. 2) The original lock, but has no key. The lock is in the open position.(we are looking for it and if we find it will be married back up with this chest, 3) The felt for the two section tray has fallen away from the frame. The original staple/nails are in the felt, but it needs to be secured again so it is useful. I have taken into effect these issues in the asking price, because of that I have knocked off over $120 off of what would have been my $350 original asking price. See safety note about lock below. Cedar condition: During this era of Cedar Chest/Trunks Lanes claim to fame was They Were The Only Aroma-Tight Cedar Chest In The World. Remaining shut most of its life it still retains that classic cedar smell that will keep your delicate items away from pests. Dimensions: Exterior Box: 49 L x 19.5 D x 20.5 T Inside Box: 44 L x 16 D x 14 T (With the tray closed that shrinks the height to 12 T Tray Measurements: Two Trays Each Measuring: 20.5 L x 7 D x 2 T Safety Note: This Cedar Chest has the original lock and key. There have been warnings about the lock and they are as follows: Safety Note: If the original lock is still on the chest (and it is), it is crucial to ensure it has been replaced or modified, as these older locks can lock automatically and cannot be opened from the inside, posing a safety hazard. Finally, This is an 80 year old piece of furniture. It is used. The seller does not warranty and takes no responsibility for any safety issues. The item is sold AS-IS.
