*currently 2 left This raised garden bed was built with reclaimed wood from upcycled cedar for the body, upcycled decking for the top rail, and/or any other up-cycled wood deemed appropriate to be re-purposed for a planter. Every planter may look similar, however, no 2 are the same. Each has its own character, since the outcome depends on what wood I have sourced, and what is available for that build, at that time The inside of these beds is treated with Shou Sugi Ban, or Yakisugi, as it is traditionally known in Japan. In brief, its a time honored technique of charring the wood for longer preservation from the elements, soil, rot, and insects In addition, the top rail of theses planters is Ipebrazilian walnut, sourced from central and south america, with a lifespan up to 75 yearssells for $6 per linear ft on avg. I was fortunate enough to find this as an up/re-cycle from some 1 dismantling their deck., and 1 of the hardest, longest lasting hardwoods 1 planter, in this build set, has composite decking for the top rail Add ons: - $50 additional for a raised bottom - $35 additional for weed barrier - $25 additional for exterior sealer Most of the wood is pre-cut for sizes ranging from 46 to 5 in length and 24 to 26 in width. Larger planters incur higher costs due to size, wood sourcing due to size if not available, wood waste, glue construction adhesiveand additional time required for proper framework to support the soil load. For context, a mixture of dirt/soil per cubic foot typically weighs 40 lbs when dry, and 60-80 lbs wet. A planter measuring 6 L x 26 W x 16 dirt depth equates to 800-1000 lbs when dry, and up to 1400-1500 lbs when fully soaked. Its important to explain why a few additional inches, let al 1 an extra foot or 2, need the extra structural attention, based on larger builds. When shopping planters, whether its built with new cedar, or re-purposed,cedar or redwood primarily, be sure its not built with anything treatedminimal structural integrity means it might last a couple years before bowing, heaving, collapse, etc.. So if youre shopping planters, and the price is merely over the cost to buy the cedarwoodto build it, question it... you will get what you pay for “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.” ― Benjamin Franklin These planters are built structurally sound from only up-cycled/re-purposed wood, Shou Sugi Ban treated, with a life expectancy of 15 ~ 20 yrs, when properly taken care of. The time it takes to search, source, and prep the wood, does not go into the cost.. and each build takes roughly 10 hours.
