This set was originally based on the Bachmann Challenger set 00621 which included a yellow Union Pacific engine, a matching caboose, and 2 cars. It now has many more cars, a second powered engine, much more track, and other accessories. Both engines work. Comes with power pack and connection to track. The power pack allows variable low positive or negative voltage to be applied to make the locomotive move forward or backward at variable speeds. All of the original 3 carsincluding the yellow caboosethat came with the set have horn hook couplers. The set now also has an additionalbrowncaboose. There are a total of 9 complete, working cars that have couplers on both sides, including the 2 cabooses. 8 of these use horn hook couplers, the 9 th is a newer coal car and uses knuckle couplers, but I found that its knuckle couplers can hook to the horn hook couplers on the other cars in this set. There are 2 additional cars that are complete except for a missing coupler on 1 end, so they could be used as they are as the last car on a train hooking on 1 end, or the missing couplers could be replaced. The yellow Union Pacific engine has a horn hook coupler, but the Amtrak engine is missing its coupler. I believe the Amtrak engine is an Athearn 42005. Replacement couplers can be obtained online or at a model railroad show / flea market or hobby store very inexpensively. I believe the Amtrak engine is an Athearn 42005. I can set up a short segment of track to show you that both locomotive engines work. You can also see all the cars, track, and accessories. Text or call 682-503-1757 or reply by email.
